Laxetives before Lap?

Hello everyone.

Bit of a yukky topic laxetives. Basically I have my Lap tomorrow yikes, I am so nervous cannot believe that tomorrow has actually came around so quick.

Basically I had my Pre op last week and the nurse said I would not need a bowel prep so I thought thank god.

Anyway I was at work yesterday and I had a call from the hospital I thought great they are cancelling my appointment already, I spoke to the nurse on the phone and she stated the surgeon actually did want me to have a bowel prep and I had to go after work last night to pick up the laxetives and also have today of work.

On the way to the hospital I was expecting her to just hand me a couple of tablets to take today but no, I have 3 milk shake bottle looking things and 4 packs of powder to mix into 2 litres of drink to take through out today. I cannot eat anything from 8am this morning until after the op so got to go through all of today and tomorrow with no food im starving.

Was wondering if anyone else had to have the pre op laxietives and how they got on with them, how do you know when your clear and when you will stop? x

I had picolax two sachets a few hours apart stay near the loo as you'll go and go all the time but was given a light diet sheet to follow but in a word your starving it's soon over this was for a colonoscopy investigation not an operation.

i didn't have any with my lap, i didn't think they did it anymore unless it affected where they would operate, such as bowel. i feel for you, you will be starving thats along time to go without food, but good luck, update us when you feel up to it, and take care xx

I had the powder to mix with water, and it was fine, I don't remember any emergency bathroom visits (this was 18mths ago).

I woke up from my lap, a 6hr op, and I was starving. I ate loads and felt really great, I guess the pain medication helped I did throw up several hours later though, so maybe pace yourself on the food after your op.

I have my lap too tomorrow and have had to take laxatives. Mine is 2 pixolax one at 8am and the other 6-8hrs later. I have had this once before my last lap and it is ok really, as the guys have said stay near the toilet and you will be fine. Good luck for your lap tomorrow, its so nerve racking. X

Hi I think it depends what hospital you go to, I've been to two and had to stay over night and take the laxatives in hospital, not a nice experience and I'd definitely recommend you take some Vaseline with you! The second hospital I didn't have to do this but have to say didn't receive the best care either, am being referred back to the first hospital now for second opinion on treatment for my endo. Hope all goes well for you x
