Surgery preparation

Hello,

I have my wide excision surgery and removal of cysts in 8 weeks time.

Does anyone have any tips on how best to prepare my body for it in advance?

I've read that cutting out refinded sugar and taking collagen can help reduce inflammation and speed up recovery.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you x

Endometriosis UK's Specialist advisor has created a blog post about preparing for surgery, which you can read here: endometriosis-uk.org/prepar...

It's always best to consult with your surgeon on the best ways to prepare for surgery!

Thank you, I've seen that information and from my surgeon. It's general advice.

It was more around ways I can strengthen my body and prep it through supplements/ exercises/ other ways.

Many thanks x

Hi! I would say exercising and general fitness through walking is a great way to strengthen your body. Having strong legs will help with recovery as it's easier to squat down rather than bend with your core. I would avoid antiflammatory medicines like NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac and naproxen) for 3 full days before your surgery as this can cause blood thinning. Many people say tumeric can be antiflammatory but do not take this for 2 weeks prior to surgery as this can always have blood thinning effects. Best of luck!

Try to keep your iron up. Eat lots of cruciferous veg, meat and apricots. Find out your ferritin levels and really help your body. I'm 3 weeks post op and the tiredness is next level. CakeGirly is right about turmeric - it lowers ferritin too so avoid for a while. My surgeon recommended ABC juice which is an apple, beetroot and carrot blended into a smoothie and drank daily x I also take zinc every day. I've not had any UTI s or infection post op. I'm now taking liquid iron, a probiotic and organic cranberry juice and vitamins x

I think the healthier you can eat pre-op the better - by that I mean making sure you're getting the right amount of protein and also fibre to help digestion. As well as making sure you're really hydrating (water). And definitely look at things to reduce inflammation. In terms of exercises, I think if there are exercises you can do to strengthen your abdominal area for sure. I know some people talk about pelvic floor exercises too - but I think the recommendation is to speak to a pelvic floor therapist first before. Though I think there are some NHS recommended ones online.

In addition to what the others have said, avoid taking fish oil supplements for two weeks prior to surgery as it's a blood thinner. I found out in hospital that use of a toddler step for using the toilet has been so helpful in going to the toilet. Take peppermint tea with you to hospital for after the surgery because the gas they fill your pelvic cavity with during surgery hits the nerves under your diaphragm giving you referred shoulder pain for about a week post op. The peppermint tea helps with the gas. I'm still recovering and found using a wheat bag for helping pain has been useful too. Obvs not putting it on my wounds but on the skin where it's sore. The morphine can give you constipation so ask for a gentle laxative to be prescribed straight after because trust me there's nothing worse than trying to "go" when you're constipated post op. I think laxido has helped a lot since my drama which I would like to help you avoid.

I'm taking fish supplements and didn't realise they thin blood, so I'll definitely take your advice on stopping taking them nearer the time, thank you. I hope that you feel better soon and recover smoothly xx
