Pain relief - Gabapentin

Hi all, I'm 2 years post op and have the worst symptoms I've ever had and increasing to worsen pain wise. I've just received a letter from my specialist suggesting I start on gabapentin and wondered what your experience of being on it was like, if you have.

I'm currently taking a combination of the classic paracetamol, codeine and ibuprofen. I do also have the mirena coil in since the op and am taking medroxyprogesterone to 'take the edge off', but neither of them have been successful in helping my symptoms.

TIA x

Iv tried gapapentin and it did nothing to help my symptoms, magnesium supplement alongside a spray I use when needed has been better for me.

Doesn't mean it won't help you though good luck and I hope it does help you x

Absolutely everyone is different, what hasn't worked for me may be a lifeline to others and vice versa. It's finding the right thing to help.

also speak to your GP about increasing, i did this gradually upto highest dose

Good luck again x

Hi

I was on gabapentin for a while for nerve pain.

Initially it worked well, but within weeks I became tolerant to it and had to keep increasing my dose to get any pain relief. After a few weeks, even the highest dose did nothing whatsoever.

It seems to be a problem with those type of meds, which doesn't happen with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Oh I see, I hadn't considered that. Something for me to talk to the GP about for sure, thank you!

So I'm on gabapentin and have been for a couple of months. It hasn't helped my abdominal pain, but I've been getting pain down my legs and when I walk (dr reckoned this was because of the endo pushing on the nerves in my abdomen) and it does seem to be helping with that. I started on a really low dose and then increased it. So depending on the type of pain you're experiencing, it might be worth a shot! (And I haven't had any side effects from it)

That's really encouraging to hear. I'm having such bad pain with my lower back/pelvis, hips and down my legs, that's really good to hear it's helping for you! I'll be starting on it this week, fingers crossed for minimal side effects!
