Prostap and Menopausal Symptoms

Hi,

I’m new to this group and wouldn’t normally post about anything medical.

I was diagnosed with endometriosis last year after having a huge endometrioma removed. I had the Mirena coil fitted.

Since then endometriosis has returned and I have been prescribed Prostap injections.

I had my first injection 2-3 weeks ago and showed symptoms within the first 72 hours but since then they have slowed down.

My second injection is coming up and I have fear and anxiety about the menopausal symptoms that might come. I have been prescribed Tibolone HRT but have been reluctant to try it.

Does anyone have any advice or thoughts of wisdom on how they got on with the menopausal symptoms? And if they found the add back HRT Tibolone helpful?

I’m fully aware that everyone is different and will have different experiences with medication but some light would be appreciated.

Thank you :)

Morning, I've been on zoladex (same as prostrap) for 14 months and I take it with addback normal HRT. Tibilone is fantastic if you can tolerate progestin which is synthetic progesterone. I know I'm not good on that as I have tried it already. However I take a small amount of HRT with zoladex (more natural progesterone than estrogen) and my latest MRI has shown it has shrunk my cervix, fibroids and endometrioma. As long as you get the estrogen in check you'll be OK and it's an awful drug without addback . Plus you must protect your bones mass and Tibilone is designed to do that. Lots of women on here with endometriosis keep it at bay through these drugs and Tibilone x

Also, if you are not having any menopause symptoms after a month you may not get many at all. Some women thrive on these drugs because they have suffered PMDD all their lives with erratic hormones and these drugs finally give them a sense of calm. When zoladex works for me I feel great. After 6 months though you should think about bone mass. My consultant said that these drugs give you a reasonable indication of how you would be post hysterectomy so it can help you make a decision. A hysterectomy doesn't cure endometriosis but it slows down post menopause for many even with HRT. How old are you? Xxx

Thank you so much for your response.

I’m 26. I have the Tibolone tablets on standby if I do decide I want to use them. I’ve decided to see how I feel after the second injection and go from there.

It is interesting you say I may not experience side effects more than I have already..I guess will see.

Such a frustrating feeling not being able to control my own body and how it feels.

My consultant said we would try 3-4 months initially on Prostap to see how I got on but even then they stated they would not expect me to use it longer than a year due to the side effects and given my age and hopes for the future.

Thank you again :)

Hello, I am on prostap and tibolone and it has helped me greatly. In the first month, your hormone levels can go up in response to prostap before they again start coming down. I was told to start the tibolone only once I started with the menopausal symptoms which were about 6 weeks later. I had the 3 month injection.

hi ladies

Hopping onto this with another linked zoladex question… Sunset-lady

I am 1 of those only given the injections after laparoscopy with endo removal including from bowel lining from memory.

Eventually I came off them between 2.5&3 years I think (need to check records) but never was given other treatment at the same time… is this why on removing it I found bone density had become osteopenia which has since further worsened? Refused dienogest on gp advice then was forgotten about!!

Perimenopausal sumtoms occur so eventually they give me a different contraceptive pill without breaks to help (except meant to have breaks for 4 days when break through a occur… that’s far too often again suddenly heavy then vanishes or discoloured erm goop!

Had recent bowel cancer screening as clear but now tooth for other tests as unless this is all endo- they missed a cause for more symptoms.

Sorry this sounds negative- it’s not meant to- just giving a picture as to why your replies are of interest.

Thanks

C Xx

I've been on prostap for over a year and tibilone but for me it doesn't add back enough so I need something stronger, just waiting forever to get a prescription through. I'm sure the tibilones doing something but not seeing a difference between taking it and not ATM..

I did try the femiston conti but just bled too much on that one.

Anything's better than the Endo pain and three months pregnant vibe so I'll take it for now!

Hey, oh no! I see what you mean though.

I guess I’ll know more after my second injection.

I thought I was going crazy.. I’ve been paranoid that I am pregnant but kept telling myself I can’t be.. but it’s just my hormones playing tricks on me! I think I will try the Tibolone after my second injection and see if it has any positive effects.

Thank you :)

Hi so Im 32 I was on monthly prostap injections for 6 months I came off in November 2024 fter my operation in October. I did experience menopausal symptoms - started about 4 weeks in. Hot flushes were my main one it was constant, brain fog and heightened anxiety. I was given oestrogel and utrogestan tablets which did help somewhat yes but the hot flushes and discomfort did remain for the 6 months and a while after coming off. However for me the benefits outweighed the side effects as at the time I was bleeding heavily daily, my pain was severe and when i had a period it was debilitating and it removed this part for me whilst I was waiting for surgery.

As others have mentioned it is different for everyone but best advice I can give is just keep track of any symptoms and communicate with your consultant/specialist if you feel any concern.

Sending hugs!

Thank you!

I’m keeping track of side effects and symptoms I’m having, I’ll speak to the consultant about it as-well.

Hello

First take a deep breath, give yourself a big hug, then begin…

Ok so I had zoladex and tibalone 3 times in 20 years. I firstly had zoladex without hrt add back. Big mistake on my gp part. They should have perscribed it but didn’t. Anyway I ended up with sweats so bad my palms were actually dripping when I went to my follow up appointment at the hospital. Needless to say my consultant wasn’t impressed with gp.

Consultant sorted it out and I was sooooo much better! After 3rd round I had prostap with hrt patches. These are safer apparently???? I then had a total hysterectomy.

It can take 3 months for zoladex to kick in properly so just be kind to yourself and patient. The hrt is designed to add back what the zoladex stops hormone wise so it’s no wonder our bodies get in a bit of a confused pickle isn’t it.

Good luck hope you have support around you.

I’ve been on zoladex for a month too and have had some menopausal symptoms, like headaches, brain fog, hot flushes, anxiety etc. I am also recovering from a laparoscopy so hard to tell which are from which. This is just to say that you may not get symptoms if you haven’t had any yet, I hope so anyway! I noticed symptoms particularly at the end of week two. Will have my fingers crossed for you for the next injection, sounds like you’ve got a backup just in case 😊

I’m on prostap3 and tibolone. I had the monthly one first and had nausea and less appetite and lost weight then had the 3 monthly injection 10 days late due to hospital changing appointment. Then after 2 weeks of the second injection I had a few menopausal symptoms such as brain fog, hot flushes and achey joints. I started tibolone around 9 weeks after starting the injections and I’ve been on it for a month and although it’s stopped the hot flushes, I’ve gained weight and felt suicidal and low mentally. It’s definitely the add back hrt that is making me feel like that as I felt like I had energy without it and I didn’t have much pain. Whereas how the pain is back, my belly looks huge and I feel terrible. I don’t think I can tolerate synthetic progesterone as I’ve tried mini pill, mirena coil, dineogest and degesterol and they’ve all affected my mental health and I’ve felt so low. I’m nearly 32 for reference.

Hi I'm on prostrap injections and was reluctant to try the hrt so i didn't bother. My hot flashes and night sweats have calmed down and I'm not suffering from any other issues. Hope this helps sending you a safe hug too 🤗
