Mirena coil not helping :(

I got the mirena coil 5 weeks ago to help with my pain.I had a lap surgery a year ago which found spots of endometriosis on my pelvic walls which were ablated but got the coil due to ongoing pain.

I know it can take a while to adjust to the coil but I'm struggling, I've been in pain and bleeding everyday and the constant pain is driving me crazy.

I'm wondering if a scan could be an option to ensure it is sitting correctly as it is very uncomfortable.

Is it too soon to contact my GP about it?

Thanks so much for any advice!

Hiya, I had this exact experience. Both times I’ve had the coil fitted (before and after having a baby) I bled every day and had daily pain. You can go the GP and have it checked out, they should be offering you a coil check up appointment soon anyway. I’ve had the coil for nearly a year now and was so patient, every time I had it checked it was in the right position, but I was still getting daily pain.

Eventually at 10 months I contacted the GP again because I was really struggling and they put me on a new pill alongside the coil. She told me that the coil alone won’t stop the pain because endometrial tissue is produced when you ovulate and the coil doesn’t stop you ovulating. Anyway - since I’ve been on the mini pill as well I’ve had other frustrating side effects, but the pain and bleeding has almost completely stopped!! It all takes a lot of patience because nothing works straight away. You do need to give the coil 3 - 6 months to settle before you consider taking it out, there isn’t any other option. We are so limited for endo treatments. BUT don’t be afraid to go back to the GP for a scan and ask for the pill too. I’ve not had the energy yet to look into the ovulation thing, but it seems to be working so I am angry that no doctor or Gynaecologist has ever mentioned it to me before. It’s been about four years since my lap and endo diagnosis.

I hope you can get it sorted. I feel your pain!! Xxx

This is my experience with the Mirena

I had my Mirena coil fitted September 2023. I bled for 3 weeks before contacting the doctors, who prescribed medication to help stop the constant bleeding, which it did. I then continued to have irregular periods and the usual pain which stops me from being able to move/work etc, so it did not work for me. I was prescibed the pill to take everyday for 3 months and was told this would stop periods altogether. It did, but came back after I stopped taking it. I also did not like taking it, so wont be taking it again. I had a transvaginal US in December 2024 after being referred again by a different gynaecologist to look at my uterus, ovaries and cervix. Whilst nothing out of the ordinary was noticed there (normal for US when looking for endo so ive read) it was confirmed my coil had moved and needed to come out (I didn't actually have any pain or symptoms that I can piece together to suggest the coil had moved). I just had it removed Tuesday just gone (14th January 2025) it was the most traumatic experience, it was stuck and hurt like hell, but it's out. I'll never have another one, I suggest requesting a scan to confirm it's position and if it is out of position, getting it removed ASAP. I'm sorry it's not helping you. Just to note the strings were still visible/could be felt even though it was out of position, so just checking the strings isn't a way of knowing whether it's in place or not. I hope you find relief soon x
