Mirena Coil Questions

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with Endometriosis in March '19 after undergoing a laparoscopy.

Three weeks ago a large part of my womb lining fell out and I was taken back in to hospital, where I was advised to get the Coil fitted.

So two days ago I had the Mirena Coil implanted and have been in agony since with severe cramp pains. I'm not bleeding but have brown mucus leaking.

I was told I would have pain for the first 24 hours but this is way worse than I was expecting. Is this normal? What should I do?

Any help and advice is appreciated, as I'm new to all of this.

Thanks x

I’ve just had my first laparoscopy 4 days ago where I also had the mirena coil fitted. I’ve been having cramps too and I’ve read about it being normal for the first week and a bit. If it’s agony then definitely go to hospital if it gets worse. It doesn’t sound right that you have brown mucus leaking. Hope you’re ok x

Hi, thanks for your reply. It's so daunting with everything isn't it. I hope you're recovering well after your op too? The pain definitely eased for me in that sense. I've spoken to a friend's friend who is an A&E nurse & she said to give it a couple more days & then go in, if nothing changes. So I'll see how it goes. Take care x

Hi, it definitely is daunting! I’m recovering ok, very sore and struggling to walk. The actual pain I had before the op though has gone! I hope your pains have calmed down and you’re feeling a bit better x

Hi! I had my coil fitted in January 2018, but I too had severe pain post insertion for much longer than the 24 hours mentioned. I was still getting quite severe cramps 3 days post insertion and 'normal' cramps as it were for a good few weeks. I also had quite heavy bleeding post-insertion which then settled to brown discharge which again lasted a few weeks whilst it settled.

That being said, I would however get it checked if it remains severe, just to check there isn't an infection or other complication causing the pain/discharge. There is no harm getting checked to be safe and for peace of mind! x

Thanks so much for your reply, it's definitely put my mind at rest a little. 4 days later I have regular cramping all day & severe in the mornings & evenings. Think I'm going to seek advice from the doctors just be on the safe side, as you said. Take care x
