I've been on Desogestrel (progesterone only pill) for about 5 weeks now to try and control my pain and bleeding while I wait for my excision surgery. I've had a lot of spotting but yesterday I came on a very heavy period only 8 days after finishing my last period and I'm wondering if I need to be concerned or if this is fairly normal? It means my cycle has only been 13 days in total. At first I thought I would probably just bleed for a couple of hours and then be fine but there is no doubt that this is an actual period and I am in a lot of pain.
If I ask the GP or consultant about it will they just tell me to double the dose? I'm not sure I want to do that yet as my body clearly doesn't agree with this pill so I would be scared to increase my intake.
Any advice or opinions on this at all??
Thanks in advance,
Lil💛

Hiya ! , it can take your body about 3 months to get used to the POP , so perhaps give it a bit of time , some clinicians would perhaps say that you could double the dose , however there isnt much research to say that it actually does work for pain unless you have forgotten to take the pill and youre taking it when you next remember which happens to be the same day (for contraception use) . My advise would be to attend a Sexual health service who consist of specialist contraception clinicians, they can go through your POP method in much more greater detail & perhaps you might find a different method that would suit you better until your surgery. in the meantime you could look at this helpful link fsrh.org/documents/cec-guid...sexwise.org.uk/contraception
I bled everyday then was instructed to double dose but continuous bleeding carried on for the entire 6 months I was taking it. As well as having very very low/irritable mood.
Give it some time to see if the bleeding stops, if not, go back to GP to see about change of pill.
I've been quite similar to this my dose was 75mg they've just doubled my dose up 150mg from today. I have googled it and this seems to be the go to dose for the condition.
Hi i was on that and i gave up after three months of bleeding with only one week off. I went to the doctor's and was told i had to give it six months, i asked if i could double it, but they just said to book myself into the family planning clinic as they could not advise on such things, there's a waiting list of at least six months for that too. So i went on prostrap injections instead. I hope you get things sorted out soon sending you a big hug too x 🤗
Oh and after speaking to the nurse at my last appointment I was told it can make the bleeding worse. And she was the one who told the nurse who i asked if i could double it to give it six months 😔
