Should you take the pill at the same time everyday to stop periods?

I was wondering is it important to take the pill at the same time each day to effectively stop periods? I've been on Yasmin just over three months and I bled alot but thought it had settled as I had two and a half weeks no bleed. Then I forgot to take it one day and another day took it in the afternoon instead of morning and now it's like I'm having a period and I'm in severe pain from it.. I don't know if this is coincidence or if it was caused by missing one and taking one at a different time? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance! X

Taking it at the same time every day only prevents pregnancy as far as I know, some people will still bleed on the pill (I've always been a bleeder) no matter how many people tell you that taking it can stop your periods, it all depends on the person. I wouldn't have thought taking it at the same time would stop them, but missing one can make you bleed as your body thinks it's a withdrawal bleed as the hormone has gone x

Thanks for the reply! Ok grand I had thought that was the case, that must have been what set it off cause my pain and bleeding had finally been under control over the last few weeks, I only had lap on October so shouldn't be in pain all the time. Thanks for your help, hope you're doing ok x

I believe everyone’s body copes with it different.

Personally, I was on Yasmin for years and I used to take it for 6 months at a time as my dr wanted me to stop having periods. It didn’t work for me as at month 3 I would bleed on and off, full on period style but it would last 2/3 days once a week. Also if I missed a day it would never start my period and I 100% never took them at the same time each day as I can never remember haha

I had the mirena coil fitted though and that really did stop my periods.

Hi thanks for the reply! I was told to stay on it for 3 months to give my body a chance to adapt to it, I bled for most of the first two and a half months but for the last three weeks it was under control so I think because I forgot it one day and then took it at a completely different time of the day my body reacted to it (I'm hoping) because I really want it to work after sticking with it for so long. Delighted to hear the mirena works for you! Personally I couldn't get it after seeing what it puts people through I couldn't take that risk, I think my body would react badly to it so hoping Yasmin works. Thanks for your help! Hope you're doing ok x

Hello, I also take the combined pill consistently (on my Doctors recommendation). For me it is a good experience so far, I find it really gives me break from my symptoms as my hormones are more balanced. It took about 3 months for everything to balance out, but now I feel good. My Doctor also said taking it could help to slow the growth of the endo, as you prevent yourself from having the estrogen boost every month with a period. I also have a small period if I miss a pill, so I'm trying really hard not forget now! Good luck xxxxx

Thanks for the reply! That's very reassuring, I am hoping I'm the same and it continues to work once I take them continuously. I know it can be so easy to miss one but I'll definitely be more conscious of it now as I know what happens if I miss it. Glad you have found something that's working! Thanks for your help xx

Maybe your body is still getting used to the pill everyones body is different. I'm on combined also (Cilest) first time I used it I couldn't stop bleeding so I went off it and took somethig else. Later on I decided to go back and it worked perfectly doesn't help to much with pain but balances my cycles well. Just give it some more time and try your best to take it as close to the same time as possible. Good luck😊

Thanks for your reply! My doctor had said it takes three months and it has just been over three so I will definitely stick with it and see since I've been on it so long. Yes I'll definitely be more conscious since I now know what happens if I miss one. Thanks again, hope you're doing ok xx

Hi, just jumping on this thread as I’m in a similar position.

Currently on week 6 of taking Yasmin and have been bleeding on and off for about 2 of those weeks. Planning to take it for 3 months then have a break as recommended.

I am finding it isn’t doing much for my pelvic pain though, I just wondered as you’re further ahead than me whether you noticed any improved in pain towards the three month mark? That’s the main symptom that I am looking to improve really and so far not having much luck, but conscious you have to give these things time!
