Pain Relief/Transemic acid

Hi

I have deep bowel and rectal bleeding on my periods and severe pain. I take the pill back to back so usually only have a period every four months and the symptoms return.

However I have had a period early Jan and then one for the last two weeks which isn’t stopping.

Paracetamol doesn’t help that much. I have just got mefemaic acid from the doctor to try again but last time it didn’t help that much.

I’m starting transemic acid now to stop the bleeding as I’m so worn out.

Can anyone suggest anything else I could ask the doctor about?

Thanks

So sorry to hear you're dealing with this. Have you been diagnosed with endo? Bottom line is paracetamol does nothing for pain. Mef acid is useful for period pain but is ultimately stronger ibuprofen. They need to be getting your pain under control so ask for something stronger. If you've not been diagnosed then ask for laparoscopy. Good luck x

Hi

I have had symptoms for over five years but just got confirmation via an MRI.

I am waiting for my consultant appointment in March to know the full details but I know I will have to have surgery.

I got transemic acid to stop the bleeding today as it has been nearly three weeks now of my period.

They gave me naproxen and mfemaic acid for pain but from past use they didn’t help so much.

I think it's awful that patients are expected to live normal lives without adequate pain relief. I wouldn't advise anyone to start opioids but they're the only pain relief that has allowed me to live a semi normal life. Without them I'd be verging on disabled. What i find useful when describing pain is to let the doctor know what you could do i.e. dog walking, gym, work full time vs what you are capable of now due to the pain. It helps them see the impact on your life x

To echo some other comments here - ask the GP for more pain relief. I am prescribed 30mg codeine which I take alongside ibuprofen (lysine) and paracetamol - it doesn't always control the pain but is a massive improvement over not having it. I found mefenamic acid did very little. My symptoms are far and away worst on my period so I only take it those days. I was also diagnosed with deep endometriosis on the bowel via MRI. Worth noting that the codeine can definitely be constipating but in my case I get diarrhea on my period so it works out pretty well for me.

Best of luck.
