Endometriosis and mirena coil

Hi, I hope someone can help, i was diagnosed with endometriosis in December 2023 after undergoing laparoscopy, it couldn't be removed at the time, I am now waiting for robotic excision, I have been recommended to have the mirena coil fitted at the same time as surgery. However, contraception has always had a negative impact on my mental health so I'm very unsure whether to go for it and wondering if anything else has worked for anyone

I suffer with anxiety (treated with escitalopram) and previously had the combined pill and mini pill, both of which affected my mood. I’ve had the Mirena coil since last June and so far I’ve not seen any severe flares that I can’t just put down to other factors.

Hey!

I would highly recommend the coil for pain and endometriosis symptom management however the first few months I found it took a while to settle down some hefty emotions. It might be worth discussing with someone what the pros and cons would be for your personal situation. The emotions do settle after a few months, it's just a lot of hormones and change at once.

Morning!

I’ve had a mirena coil since 2019 to help with endo symptoms. I found for the first 6 months, my symptoms were lessening, but I still experienced some pain. After about a year, the pain lessened a lot, to whenever I had a period it was basically not noticeable. I started getting quite bad pain again at the start of 2023 (about 3ish years in to having a coil). I have still bled throughout, but it’s been significantly lighter (although for a longer amount of time).

I haven’t noticed it have any affect on my mental health. The reason I went for the coil was because I was having issues with the pill and the hormones being all over my body causing issues with a different condition. The coil being only localised has meant I haven’t had any of these issues. My partner will probably also say I’ve been more stable mentally since swapping from a pill to the coil.

Hope this helps!

hun I suffered awful bad with my mental health specially with the rod implant so in the end I went for the coil as I found the depo made me put on a lot of weight. I like you was diagnosed last year but in April am waiting for a bowel resection and to unfreeze my pelvis organs as my pelvis is frozen. I take sertraline and qutiapine for my mental health which keeps me kinda of more stable but with the e endo and the pain which is ongoing it does make you down not gonna lie.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Personally, my experience with Mirena coil was not great. Bled constantly for 5mths and like you, suffered with mental health issues whilst taking it. The relief when it was removed was immense. (Placebo? Maybe, but didn't care - just wanted rid of that thing!)Tried Norethisterone for a couple of weeks, but big no for me - vomiting, super low mood etc. Eventually settled on a low dose combined pill (femodene/millinette). It worked for me for years. (Tricycling, then just taking it with no breaks at all).

I know the Mirena works for some people, but at least with oral contraceptives, you can try them out more easily. You might discover one you can tolerate.

I don't know what stage you are at regarding family, but I already had my 3 lovely children, so a uterine ablation helped to take the edge off the adenomyosis and Endo pain and bleeding.

Personally, I would want to see what difference the Endo removal made and enjoy that relief for a while, then when you are ready to try out some other preventative options, you can monitor side effects more easily.

You know your body - don't be afraid to trust your instincts, but keep an open mind about options too. I would never have believed a combined pill would work for me in the end (after laparoscopy of course).

Wishing you lots of comfort, relief and successful management of this hideous condition. Take care. Xx
