hi l am 75 and having this op in near future. Was suposed to be having this today but pre asses clinic found a heart murmur for which l am awaiting ECG. They cancelled my op and will get back on waiting list after ECG, they didnt say how long l would have to wait for this but have flagged up 4 hospitals within 40 miles of home. Am reconciled to the wait, but was told they inflate tummy with gas for which l will be given Codeine but need to stock up on paracetamol. Is the pain similar to period gripes or might l need to allow for several weeks of pain. Thank you so much for reading my long winded post 🌺🌺🌺

Hello. Sorry if I have misinterpreted and my answer doesn’t make sense but I think you’re asking about the post op pain of a laparoscopic op, am I correct? If I am, I found the pain went right into the socket of my shoulder and was told this is very common as some of the gas used to inflate your tummy/abdomen can remain inside after the procedure, irritate the phrenic nerve which has its origins in the diaphragm and nerve endings in the shoulder. In my case this pain was worse than the incision holes. I am told peppermint tea can help with easing this but I never got that information till much later. Good luck with it all. Nina.

than you so much fr tid, did nt realised about the shoulder pain but l can see how connective nerves culd cause this s basically keep gently on th e move and maybe do some seated shoulder rolls as though been seated for to long.Good luck and hapy thoughts to all who have taken the time to answer mde, stay safe 🌺🌺

P.S sorry should have said, my shoulder pain lasted about two days. I took it very slow after my laps to give my body the time it needed to heal, slowly and gently building back up to exercise, walking, stretching when I felt I could.

Hello there! Immediately post op, it was painful to move anywhere, but I managed on codeine and paracetamol. My tummy was swollen and tender for about 3 weeks, and this seems to be the average time it takes to recover - maybe longer. Just take it easy and don’t push yourself.

Hi Nina,I’ve just had laparoscopic total hysterectomy and excision of extensive endometriosis - I found the gas pain mildly uncomfortable but I’m a frequent flyer of laparoscopy I’ve had a total of 8 surgery’s over the last 30 years. I managed on oxycodone in hospital I went home after 2 days and I didn’t need much pain relief really, paracetamol as required but managed well. the gas can be uncomfortable but gently moving frequently helps it to move around - not sure how helpful the peppermint tea is because the gas I’m outside of your bowel it’s in the cavity of your abdomen. Keep warm, mobile and drink lots of fluids. I think you’ll be fine.

Good luck 😊

I had lap with one ovary and fallopian tube removed plus a lot of endo removed. I had the gas pain between shoulders too. I also had tremendous pain across my stomach, I can't remember how long it lasted (was 2 yrs ago) but I wasn't on strong pain killers for too long. Certainly at first it I couldn't get up off seat or out of bed- anything that used tummy muscles was top level painful.

I would recommend you get some extra pillows or a bed wedge to elevate your upper body for rest and sleep for the first few nights post laparoscopy. It helps alleviate the pain from the gas against the diaphragm. I found I could manage with basic painkillers as the surgeon had administered localised nerve blocks during the procedure but I also had codeine on standby. Keep walking around little and often post operatively and best of luck with your surgery.
