Surgical removal of ovaries and fallopian tubes

Hi,I've just seen a consultant and due to have surgery to remove my ovaries and fallopian tubes. I'm nervous about the surgically induced Menopause this will bring about. Has anyone had this surgery, and if so, how were the symptoms afterwards?

Thanks in advance for sharing.

The plan is for me to have this for possible post ablation tubal sterilisation syndrome plus hysterectomy due to adenomyosis and excision of deep infiltrating endo on bowel and peritoneum. I didn't understand how you could take hormone replacement therapy and it wouldn't just reactivate endo again, but the doctors explained that you take a consistent supply of hormones so your hormones aren't fluctuating with your cycle anymore. I'm interested in others experiences of this too, hope you get some responses and your treatment goes well.

Thanks Ali, that's helpful insight as I was wondering about that too. All the best with your surgery and recovery x

hi, i have also been told similar , at least one ovary and likely hood other is damaged ( said it will only be a case of during the operation knowing so could wake up having been put in to surgical / early menopause) Due to the spread of endo

I didn’t really think it through during the appointment but now have a lot of unanswered question / concerns.

I’m mid 30 , can I ask your age group ?

I'd love to say I'm the same age as it would make me a lot younger 🤣 I'm 47. I can empathise with your experience. I felt the same. You are trying to take in so much information from the consultant that your brain is full. Then when you've had a chance to let it sink in, so many questions comd up and you think "I wish I'd asked that".

yes and the uncertainty plays on your mind.

In my case it was a very flippant conversation about the menopause. 😕

Is your surgery due soon.

Best of luck.

That's terrible that it was so flippant. It's a significant thing! I'm just waiting for a date to come through. Best of luck with yours x

hi, I’m 4 weeks post op having this surgery. I was having tests and drs thought I had Ovarian Cancer so after MRI and ultrasound discovered I had mass on my ovary and severe endo. I’m 49 already on HRT about 18 months as thought I was peri (there is no test for it so who knows). So 4 weeks on back working in the office, wounds have heeled, had severe headaches for past 2 weeks and really tired. GP has increased my patch and am feeling ok. Not sure if I’m a lucky one at the mo or just not hit me yet. I’ve read good and bad stories. Good Facebook group called surgical menopause uk support group. If you have any questions tho, let me know if I can help in any way xx

Thank you so much Michelle. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I'm glad it has been a good one ans hope the adjustment in your patches cures the headaches 🤞 x

hello. I had this surgery in 2017 to remove my 2nd ovary (first had been removed in 2015). My surgeon (an excellent lady) suggested I shoukd start hrt immediately and should be seen by menopause clinic (as I’d had some other complications previously - a DVT and abnormal cells in breast ducts). I did have some hot flushes in hospital, so effect was speedy! The very good news is I’ve not had ANY endometriosis symptoms since.

Hi,this is a good news:) I'm due to have full hysterectomy with removal of the ovaries (I'm 44) and the doctor told me I should start combine Body-indentical HRT. How do you feel with it? Any side effects or weight gain? I'm already in late perimenopause and had not had a period for 3 months now with all the menopause symptoms for few years as well. :( Thank you

I was late 40s and probably peri menopausal already. I’ve always struggled with my weight as ann andult and I think it’s now harder to lose excess weight but I put that down to age rather than hrt. I still have my uterus so take both oestrogen and progesterone, I think progesterone isn’t usually taken after full hysterectomy. I have an autoimmune condition which has worsened in recent years so don’t feel a million dollars, but menopause wise I think I’m doing ok!

That's great to hear! Thanks for sharing. Did the Menopause symptpms last long?

I had some quite overwhelming hot flushes while in hospital (I was in 5 days as I’d had extensive excision surgery) but I think they stopped pretty much immediately once I was taking HRT.

It's promising:) Hope this is all behind you now. I will need progesterone as to keep the endometriosis in bay otherwise can spread fast again, as I have it on my bowel and outside bladder as well. Hopefully after everything is removed and endo at the same time my chronic pain and bloating will dissappear xxThank you for the information so helpful xx

that makes sense about the progesterone. I too was told endo was on and potentially in my bowel and to expect to need future bowel surgery but, fingers crossed, no recurrence of symptoms to date. I hope you have a positive experience too, all the best x

Hi Incapink. I had ovaries and tubes removed six months ago (age 53 and still having periods). I haven't taken HRT and started getting hot flushes and insomnia at six weeks - both are getting less frequent now though. My biggest concern before the operation was personality change/depression due to the hormones stopping but I feel exactly the same which was surprising.

I hope your operation and recovery go well, and that you have an easy menopause.
