Tranexamic acid - any advice?

Username12345678 profile image

In short, I have endo & adeno and am currently treatment free whilst waiting for a hysterectomy (I'm 45). My periods are pretty heavy and painful and a doctor has suggested trying Tranexamic acid for a few months. I just wondered if anyone else has tried this in a similar situation and did it work?

Thanks!

Hi I have adeno and endo and suffer with very heavy periods and labour like pains. I tried menefemic acid which didn’t work for me. Now on the decepeptyl injections and still bleed, but lighter now. It may work for you though so worth a try 😀

Thanks for the reply. I tried menefemic acid years ago and it didn’t do anything either! I suppose anything is worth a try though

Yeah it’s hard when things don’t work isn’t it 🥲

Yes definitely go for it, it helps reduce blood loss.

Yes it did! I’ve just had my surgery last night- subtotal hysterectomy; they did it due to my massive fibroids but they found endometriosis also, so I ended up with an ovary being removed 🤔

I felt rubbish yesterday but I managed a short shower this morning without passing out 😅! Feel bruised but am ok actually. All my lines are out so I am free. Just can take a couple of minutes to get up and stand up to get going 😇

Hi lovely, I took it a while ago but I am sure I took Tranexamic acid and menefemic acid together. My periods were so heavy in my early days but together I do believe it eased the bleed! Not sure on its own as didn’t try xx

Yes Thank you lovely. Hope you get sorted soon xx

Forgot to mention TXA is commonly used in trauma management for reducing blood loss, but in injection form, so yes it’s recommended for saving red blood cells! It’s also part if the NICE guidelines for treating heavy menstrual bleeding 😬

HiI had heavy periods and was also prescribed this to stem the flow of blood. When taken it did work for me, my tips are start to take it just before your period starts and check with the Dr on how many you can take as depending on your size (and I'm quite weighty) it turns out that I could take more than just the three times a days which worked for me.

Em x

Hey, I tried this and it didn’t work for me unfortunately, I also tried menefemic acid which also didn’t work :( I know it does help a lot of people though so it’s worth a try! Xx

It’s definitely worth a try. I also note that there aren’t many side effects listed which is very unusual for anything they give us to manage these awful conditions!

I have taken Tranexamic acid a few times, it didn’t help. I am now on Cerelle (mini pill) - 2 pills everyday rather than the usual one pill. It has taken 8 months to see a difference but finally my bleeds are now really light and nowhere near as painful - I am 50.

It's been a life saver for me, my periods last 8-9 days and the first 3-4 days are always extremely heavy(I have to change my clothes multiple times a day sometimes) and they really do ease the severity of the period... Love them!!

If you use them both together they're more effective

Hi, I tried it Tranxemic 6 months ago and the first period I used it with I was like this is a miracle then following ones it did nothing. I upped my doze as I had only taken a smaller dose anyway but it didn't do anything for a good 3 periods I tried it after. I also found when I did take it one time it made a blood test really hard to give blood weirdly too. I've given up with pain killers as my stomach couldn't cope I had really bad stomach pains too.I was at my wits end and tried accupuncture and even though I was a sceptic I'm now a convert its really helped me. Plus I've been using lots of tips from Maisie Hills book Period Power. It's helped me manage my pain better and my period experience. It's changed my mindset in trying to take some control back. I have adenmyosis diagnosed as I've opted out of a lap for now due go other health issues, but symptoms of Endo too.

Hope this helps with your research take care x

Hi, I’m not really in same situation as yourself.

I have endo and was placed into chemical menopause at age of 24.

Unfortunately during month 7 of injections I began to bleed heavily and that old familiar pain came back.

Tranexamic acid stopped the bleeding thankfully.

I have also used it in the past and found it good.

Hi there, I too have endo and adeno.....I tried Tranexamic Acid 10-15yrs ago and it worked for a short while and I did notice a reduction in my blood flow.

However I stopped using it at least 7yrs ago as I found that I was still losing lots of blood and it wasn't working for me any more...I've not replaced it with anything but I'm also 45 and my periods are still very very painful, I'm still managing my difficulties IBS but the number of bleed days have reduced from 9/10 to 7/8.

I'd say to definitely try Tranexamic as it may work for you 😊

Hi 🙂

I started Tranexamic acid quitenanlingbtime ago as I was having such heavy and frequent bleeding. I initially didn't think it was going to work because it took maybe 2 months to fully 'kick in' but ever since my periods have been almost spot on regular every time. I normal amount of bleeding, regular periods for a normal amount of time. I occassiinally get a heavier cycle, just like most, but it is not even close to what I experienced before.

I do take it daily rather than just during my period - I was bleeding or spotting most days for a very long time and if I stop taking it I will almost immediately start bleeding and spotting again. I mention this because Ive heard from others that they only take it pqrt of the month/cycle period.

While it has been a massive help from a bleeding point of view it has not helped my pain levels, but I do experience pain, to some degree, every day now (as opposed to when I use to only suffer from pain part of the month).

I was prescribed progesterone to try and address pain but this made me start bleeding and spotting again, despite the Tranexamic acid, and did not help with any pain for me. I am just including this information in case you may be taking progesterone as it potentially might have an impact on any results. It doesn't cause the same side effects in everyone.

For me the Tranexamic acid has made a huge difference as, although I still struggle with pain at least I am no longer dealing with excessive bleeding the majority of the time - or the effects of the heavy blood loss.

As a side note, I was prescribed Mefenamic Acid first, which is also an anti-inflammatory, and I continue to take it daily as part of my pain management. It made no difference to when or how much I was bleeding.

I wish you luck in reaching the decision that is right for you.

Username12345678 profile image
Username12345678 in reply to Missy100

Thank you for your reply. I have just been offered progesterone but decided just to try the tranexamic acid first. I’m managing the pain with back to back para/ibuprofen/codeine and although it doesn’t stop the pain it makes it bearable. Progesterone sounded like it was a big commitment with lots of potential side effects. I hope that you are able to find something that helps you x

Missy100 profile image
Missy100 in reply to Username12345678

In response to you pain relief, I offer the following to consider, but please disregard if unwanted 🙂.

If you are taking an anti inflammatory (ex: ibuprofen, naproxen, mefenamic acid) back to back it can be extremely hard on your gut and cause issues of its own. If you speak to your GP they should be able to prescribe you something like omeprezole to protect against it.

Also, I'd suggest making sure you keep an eye on your bowel movements with so much codeine as it is known for causing constipation which can already be an issue for many with Endo. You may find yourself needing to adjust your diet or even taking medication to prevent or treat it. Unnoticed/ignored constipation can lead to additional unpleasant issues none of us need or want.

TX Acid works well for me to reduce bleeding, whilst mefenemic acid helps with pain management only

Hi there - this is really timely! I have fibroids and adenomyosis (I’m also perimenopausal) and have been trying various treatments to improve increasingly irregular and very heavy periods. I’ve just switched from cyclical progesterone (Norethisterone 20 days on 10 days off) to continuous via Cerazette. This is the first month I thought I’d try not using tranexamic acid to help reduce the heaviest bleeding - because I didn’t think it made much difference and the GP said I shouldn’t need it as well as the progesterone. Big mistake! I’ve been on to my GP for an emergency repeat prescription today. For me I just use it for the three heaviest days to help reduce the worst of the bleeding, and it definitely helps. I’m still working through other options to try and tackle the underlying problem. So definitely not a cure for me but absolutely makes the whole hideous process more manageable. I hope you find something that works for you!
