Hi everyone,

I’m yet to be diagnosed however my gynaecologist has put me on the list for a lap. I’m a little apprehensive as I have heard a lot about laps with regular gynaecologists and that they may not always pick up endo?

Have most of you had your laps with general gynae rather than endo specialist?

Not sure if I am just worrying too much about not receiving the expected answers and what I have been waiting so long for.

Thank you! Xxxx

Hi there. I’m in the United States (on the UK page for a friend), but I had my laparoscopy done by a specialist. My regular gynecologist wouldn’t do it for me. Based on other posts I’ve seen, I would recommend consulting with a specialist. The hospital I went to has minimally invasive gynecological surgeons who perform all of the laparoscopies, so I would see if you can consult with a surgeon like that. General gynecologists are qualified to perform laparoscopies, but they don’t have as much experience or expertise as specialists. Specialists also have teams of nurses and other doctors who are more qualified to be in the OR during a laparoscopy as well.

That being said, regular gynecologist are qualified to perform a laparoscopic procedure. If yours performs them regularly, then my suggestion would be to ask your doctor the questions you asked above. If they are professional, they won’t have an issue with you asking whether a specialist would be a better option for you. If you’re uncomfortable with that, you can ask for a referral to a specialist. Like I said, I’m in the US, so I’m not very familiar with UK healthcare. I only know what my friend has told me, so I apologize if my advice is based more on how American healthcare is run . My regular gynecologist referred me to a specialist, so I hope that is an option for you as well.

Good luck with your surgery! I hope it brings you answers and helps you feel better.

Hi

So it's important to check that your gynaecologist has a minimum of a specialist interest in endo. You can Isuzu find their interests listed on the hospitals website. This is different to being an endo specialist (on the NHS they only deal with more severe endo).

When I mentioned my extreme bloat (endo belly as I’ve read) she informed me that this was not a symptom? I thought this may not be a good start if she does not know that it is a symptom?

Thank you both for your replies, I’m going to ask as many questions as I can xxxx
