Mirena coil and bleeding

Looking for some advice before I ring the GP tomorrow. I was diagnosed with endometriosis in may 2017 after suffering pain and other symptoms for many years. In 2019 I had a pain flare which lasted 6 months before I was started on amitriptyline and was given the Mirena coil to help my pain. I've had my Mirena coil for just over a year now. The last few months I've been having increased endo and cramping pain, and a new nipping type of internal pain. I'm on amitriptyline which is less effective now and have gone back to taking naproxen twice daily and co-codamol some nights. I've also been spotting/ light bleeding for the last month or 2 with clots and tiny bits of tissue type material. Has anyone else experienced this? Was thinking of calling the GP but have been holding off as I don't want to bother them.

Hi, I have the mirena coil and have done for 3yrs I also have endometriosis and get the same symptoms as you, blood spotting and clots, cramping and sharp pains etc. I’ve spoken to other girls who have the mirena and they tend to have no bleeding or discomfort but they don’t have endometriosis, so I believe in our cases it could be the endometriosis that’s playing up. I have found the mirena the best form of management for my endo though, it has really calmed down the heavy bleeding.

I think if you are feeling pain to that extreme then you should talk to the dr, you shouldn’t have to suffer like that, maybe they need to re check how your endometriosis is? Maybe it has developed?

I’m in the exact same boat as you, I feel mine has gotten worse over the years and think by checking it will give me peace of mind about what happening inside my body.

Hope that helps xx

Hi, I've had the Mirena coil for 4 years with mild cramps and very light to almost nothing spotting. Trust you're gut. You know your body better than anyone and if you think something is wrong or need advice always ask for it and don't hesitate! My GP told me that this can happen if the coil has slipped out of place which can make it ineffective but you can also check yourself if it's still in position or not as you should be able to feel the string when you place your finger in your uterus.

Yes phone gp and keep on at them to you have a scan , it will only get worse and built up , I had it for years tried everything to make my pain main less . I've had a full hysterectomy as the endometriosis was attached all over and to my bowels and my bladder. They didn't want to give me a hysterectomy but there was nothing else they could do as it was travelling up my body . Its not nice for any woman to have so much discomfort for years .
