Laparoscopy and period

Hi! I have been offered a date to undergo a laparoscopy but I will be on my period on the day. Does anyone know if this affects the surgery or anyone who has had the same situation can let me know if the recovery would be worse due to also being on the period? Thanks

Hi I had mine during my period and I worried as well. They said it was fine. But it was a bit tricky in recovery. Make sure you have pads as you wont want to use tampons. But I think the pain wasn't any worse.

I hope it goes well xx

I had my first lap on Saturday & was due my period same day. I called hospital to check if it was ok & was told it didn’t matter to surgeon, but if I was uncomfortable I could change. I’m still waiting on my period to arrive!

Thank you very much! How are you feeling after the surgery?

Not too bad thanks. Bit hard to get comfy in bed. I’ve been taking it easy - no heavy lifting, housework etc. I’m dying to get out for a walk, but going to give it a few days. No idea what to expect when my dressings come off tomorrow. When’s your surgery?

It was meant to be this Saturday but they moved it to next week Saturday... they told me they would not do the surgery while on my period.. so weird... How was changing your dressings? I hope you are feeling good!

HiConsultant told me that it can help show endo better when I asked. I was sort of on at the time.

I was due to start my period the day of my surgery and the surgeon said it was fine. I was worried and embarrassed to ask at first but the nurse and surgeon didn’t even bat an eye lid and gave me the stuff I needed . They gave me hospital knickers and I wore a pad. I didn’t actually start my period until 2 days after . But I would definitely take a few pads with you to make you feel more comfortable. Good luck with everything !

I was on my period for 2 of my surgeries.. apparently helped surgeons see more of the endo compared to the what they were expecting with MRI. Recovery was the same as the surgery I had without a period...

Hi! I had a Laparoscopy in November and had been told prior to my operation it wouldn't be a problem if I was on my period. In the few days leading up to my laparoscopy I got my period and I was worried but when I got there I told them so they were aware, and they were fine with it. Unfortunately I wouldn't keep my underwear and pad on during the surgery but they put a pad between my legs during the surgery. I wasn't aware they would do this so I was a bit shocked so I thought it was worthwhile letting you know that small detail. In terms of recovery, they say that most people have some bleeding after a laparoscopy but I only bled for a day or two more until my cycle ended. I think it may be better actually if you are on your period while you are having it as the bleeding doesn't go on for longer. Hope this info helps and good luck 👍

Hi, if you ring the hospital to ask the consultants secretary. You may be asked to take tranexamic acid which reduces/stops your flow. I doubt it will interfere with your surgery. Good luck 😊

Hi lovely, I was told I couldn’t have it whilst on my period, it may be worth you phoning to check with them. Xx

Wow thanks for the advice. They have indeed said they will not do it while on my period.. how strange that so many others could have it anyway.. Maybe it depends on the surgeon? I will need to wait for another date... 😞

Aww I’m sorry ! I thought that as I was reading, but I specifically remember last year having to change my date because he said he wouldn’t do surgery while I was on my period! It may depends on surgeon , I’m unsure as to why they never told me just that they couldn’t do it x

Hi, you can still have it. Most of the time you will bleed anyway after your surgery that’s very normal. I would ask why they can’t do it? If you have a cyst and in pain / endo they definitely will do! Hope you feel better soon. X

I had my period when I had my last excision surgery. The op and day one coincided. It was great as i was in theatre for an hour and all the bleeding came out during that hour. They saw how much I bleed too, "we've never seen that much bleeding before". Period under General Anaesthetic is great- over in an hour 😂😊

No need to worry, it will be fine. They're used to it, won't stop you having the op. You may feel more tired post op but operations are exhausting anyway so don't worry. Hope the op goes really well. xx
