I’m in hospital 12 hours after my full hysterectomy and they’re telling me that I can’t have Hrt for 6 weeks. Is this normal? It’s not what was agreed but my consultant changed at the last minute. I’m extremely anxious and emotional and not thinking straight. I’m a single parent with my youngest doing his last year of a levels and my mum is elderly and needs my support I also am self employed and work supporting students. I’m worried I won’t be able yo cope without my Hrt 😬 and wonder if anyone else had experienced this?

Hi i hope you are okay. I don't understand why you aren't having hrt now?? I was told by my specialist that I could only have a full hysterectomy if i agreed to carry on with the hrt i was already on and i have to take it for the next five years. You need to tell them what your specialist said to you about taking hrt. My specialist also told me after my operation (he was also my surgeon) that once you've had a full hysterectomy you automatically go through the menopause. 🤔. Also when you go home you must rest up. You've just had a major operation it can take up to 6 weeks to recover. I was laid up in bed for 8 weeks and i had to rely on my children to do everything. It's not that i didn't want to get out of bed it's just that i was so poorly with infection after infection. They knocked me for 6. Make sure you are given strong pain relief to take home with you. Sorry for going on 😕. X

I had hysterectomy last week, the only time it was mentioned was just before op. I’d prefer not to if I can, but age could be a factor. You can talk to GP about it, explain what you were told before and after.

My follow up is three months, but if I felt I needed anything I’d contact GP as their internal link with the hospital is reasonably quick.

Have you spoken to one of the nurses about the change? They can also clarify the situation with the consultant.

Might just be they need things to settle/stabilise and make sure they get the right balance.

I’m not a dr but is it because hrt can give blood clots? I’m only thinking this because after op we all have a blood clot risk hence the jabs they give us. I’ve had hrt but can only have low dose patches because I have a family member who has had a clot. I wonder if they want your blood stabilised before putting you back on hrt

Hi, I hope you are feeling ok, I had total hysterectomy last year, I’m in my 40’s and told I would unfortunately go into surgical menopause because of the removal of the ovaries. After your surgery, which is a big one, you are usually told to rest for 6-8 weeks, to let it all heal on the inside as well as the outside. They will also give you injections to help prevent DVT, which you might have to do yourself if discharge before the course ends! I had to do it for a week and I’ve got a big needle phobia 😳 as for HRT, I was prescribed Tibalone for 12 months, it’s a form of HRT and I read many others (also on here) have been given this too. But even then I was only able to start it I think 4 or 6 weeks after my op. You will be ok, to be honest with the pain and recovery, any menopause symptoms you might get you might not care about. I think I just had hot flushes, but once I was taking Tibalone, they seemed to ease off, I don’t know how or if this will help you but definitely worth asking a nurse, or your GP about.

Take care, reply back if you want any more info.

Big hug 🤗

Hi there, sorry to hear you've been put in this situation, admittedly I had mine six years ago now but like bighug said I too was told that as I'd had my ovaries removed I would start as soon as I felt ready to avoid surgically induced menopause. I do remember having to request it as they hadn't read the specialists notes, I also remember how quickly the hormone changes happened in my body before I started my patches. Please don't lose heart and stand your corner I do not believe you should have to wait unless the process has changed, I would not choose it myself. All the best with your recovery, big gentle hugs to you.
