Is the coil known to be more effective than the pill?

Hi all,

I am a bit confused and wondered if anyone has had the same experience? Why is the Mirena pushed over the pill?

My gynaecologist has put me on the Mirena coil that I’ve had now for about 4 months. I am not really enjoying it to be honest and have been having quite a sore stomach and I feel like it is negatively effecting my mood. Feeling down and teary.

My Gynae has suggested that this is one of the the last things to try really before the depop injection and suggested the pill isn’t as effective as the Mirena coil in terms of treatment? I have both Endo and adymeosis

Has anyone been on the pill with success and why is the coil seen as the better option? Just getting stuck with what my options are

Hi

I refused the coil and have been fighting to go on the mini pill my gynae thinks its a good idea but my GP is waiting for conformation before I can get it. They do tend to push you towards the coil and I feel its probably cheaper then the pill and once you've got it in you tend to keep it in for a few years so your kind of 'off their books'!!! I know a few people who have had success with the mini pill in managing their symptoms. You've just got to keep trying things out till you find what helps you.

take care and keep smiling

I am not a fan of the coil for various reasons and I am sure you will get mixed feedback. Plotments is right it's your body and you know it better than your GP so if you feel it's not for you push for a change of treatment plan🍀

Hi i totally agree with you on how they push the coil. I had a bad experience with the coil and i now take a double dose of the mini pill. I have i can now manage my symptoms quite well.

Good luck I would say give the pill a go although you need to give it some time to settle in.

I have the coil, it was inserted in February and I agonised over the decision. The advice I was given by my GP and my Consultant is that its better than the pill because its delivering the hormones straight into your uterus rather than the pill giving your whole body a dose of hormones.

To be honest I've had it now for nearly 4 whole months and I don't think it's improved the symptoms of the endometriosis / adenomyosis.

I'm due to see my consultant again in July and I'm going to ask if there are alternatives.

Thanks so much for all the replies. It’s such a minefield and hard to know what the right decision is!

I have been spotting for almost three weeks and just feel a bit generally unwell with it. Will book in to see my consultant and see what he says

Hi, I had my coil inserted March 19, I didn't have bother but symptoms did really improve after about a year. I also have adenomyosis and endo. The adeno was causing most of my problems. It's very individual tho. What will work for some will not another. I would try and persevere with it a bit longer. After 6 or 7 months there was improvement and its so much better now although not cured x

Hi I have the mirena coil. It was the best thing I ever did. I had a few symptoms in the beginning like you, but it settled down. With the coil the hormone is localised rather than totalling going around your body. Obviously some gets in your blood stream but it minimal I believe. Therefore potentially having less side effects and risks. Xx😊

Thanks for your reply! How long did yours take to settle? I’m having such bad cramps, back ache and some sickness. Currently on month 4 x

From what I can remember it can take up to 9 months or so to settle. It worth sticking with it unless the side effects are unbearable for you. Everyone is so different - what works for one, may not work for another. Perhaps discuss your experiences with your GP. XX
