Surgery Length for Stage 4?

Hi all -

I know I should know this from my hospital ideally but I haven’t been told and I can’t get hold of anyone.

I’m having surgery on Monday for stage 4 endo excision at a BSGE centre. Undoing all adhesions, excision, possible loss of tubes, removing large bilateral endometriomas and possible loss of one ovary and removal of endo from bowel or potential resection / stoma bag.

From people who have experienced similar - What kind of surgery length should I be expecting?

Thanks

Hi,

Duration of surgery will be very variable dependant on how extensive and degree of infiltration for deep endo etc. I had surgery for stage 4 including most the procedures you've mentioned- was about 5 and a half hours. This included left side fallopian tube and ovary removal, removal of extensive stage 4 lesions , rectovaginal lesions removed, a disc shave of the colon and not resection ( was also told may need a stoma preop) . Also had a stent for removal of endo on the ureter. The time would be longer if a bowel resection is needed. But again time is so variable from person to person.

Best of luck with your surgery,

❤️ Sabrina

Mine was 7.5 hours - large bilateral endometriomas, bowel shave, stents for ureters, bladder, endo removal, tube flush, ovary was also cut into and removed from bowel, extensive endo removal. Hope that helps and good luck x

Tough to be honest. It was in October, I was in hospital for 10 days as I struggled with infection then I came out for 3 days back in for another week with secondary infection. It took a long time to build back up again. However I seemed to turn a corner around January time and feel a lot lot better. It was 100% worth it for me vs what I was like pre October x

Hi, mine was 4 hours long with lots of endo, adhesions, endometriomas on both ovaries and bowel resection. My surgery changed my life for the best. Good luck!

It depends on what kind of surgery and how skilled your surgeon is. If they're BSGE accredited then they'll do this kind of surgery often (they have to do a certain number per year to keep accreditation). I had robotic surgery last week and I was just under 4 hours for stage 4 recto vaginal endometriosis with fibroids. She spent a long time on cutting away the endo too. Good luck xxx

Hi

It depends how extensive it is, which probably won’t be clear until they start working on it.

Mine took 11 hours (hysterectomy, BSO, bowel resection in 2 places, appendix removed, and as much endo and adhesions removed as they could) that was with 2 surgeons at a BSGE centre.

I was in hospital 5 days.

Good luck with the op

Yes – the recovery was slow but there were no complications – it’s amazing what they can do🙂.

(The only regret was the BSO)
