Anyone experienced crippling pain with insertion of the Mirena Coil?? I'm after recommendations as I'm so scared with upcoming appointment!

I need my Mirena coil re-inserted as it was embedded in my muscle & not the cervix last time around. Both when inserting & taking out, the pain I experienced was unbelievable & I'm so scared having to go through the process again... This time I'm having a block injected first but I'm still scared that will hurt too! Has anyone else experienced a similar situation & can recommend how I deal with this, without whipping myself up into a right state - which is what I'm currently doing! Any help is much appreciated! xxx

I had my first mirena coil fitted a few weeks ago. I fully admit that the actual process was truly traumatic ( I would rather be in labour!) - however- I knew that it was all only short term and that the actual fitting wasn't going to last forever. Take paracetamol and ibuprofen throughout the day (as per instructions) before and after your appointment. I can't promise that it won't be horrible- but you WILL get through it and it is over quite quickly in the grand scheme of things. Sending positive, reassuring hugs xx

Hi LaLuz, I'm glad you're getting your mirena sorted soon. Some women are lucky and it does not give them a lot of pain getting them in and out. We deserve to not be in pain during the procedure - the thought that we should just tolerate it is barbaric! I had anesthetic by injection in the back of my hand for two of my mirena insertions because the consultant recommended it - even getting a smear test was very painful for me. I did have one insertion without any pain relief - I had decided to be brave and save the NHS money - but it was a painful mistake. I'd ask about the option for a general anesthetic. When I had mine, they didn't question the need for it. Good luck, and hope you get sorted out soon. x

I want the Mirena put in and that’s the only thing putting me off it has done for 4 year now.ivd had it inserted before endo raised its ugly head and it was more uncomfortable and cringey but now I’m scared it will hurt since I’m told nodules are indeed felt up their by my specialist.when I did have it in I loved it but can’t get the courage to go through it again now I’ve got endo so I know how you feel if they put it in wrong is what I dread

Yes, I had a thoroughly traumatic experience where the nurse in GP surgery couldn't get one in so went to Gynae and after 2 nurses and then the consultant tried to essentially force it in, one of the nurses had to advocate for me that it had to stop as it was so painful for me. They did offer to insert as part of my lap in October as I was going to be under anyway but I opted out; the potential for more pain and later repeating of the process didn't feel worth it to me. We're all different though and if it feels like it has the potential to be a game changer for you then that's what matters x
