extreme pain after coil insertion

4 weeks ago I had the mirena coil fitted to try and ease my endometriosis symptoms. It was uncomfortable at the time and I felt a really sharp pinch when it was out in place. The following two days were extremely painful with cramps and bleeding. Things then settled down for about two weeks. Then the pain was excruciating. I could hardly move, I felt sick and ended up going to A&E after 2 days as I couldn’t take the pain anymore. I was referred for a scan which I had today. The sonographer said straight away that the coil was in the wrong place and was causing the pain. I asked if it was just out of place or imbedded somewhere and he wouldn’t answer. He just said your consultant will be in touch with you very soon to sort this out. My right ovary was also 3 times larger than the left one.

I am now fretting over what the next steps are and what this could mean. Has anyone else had anything similar?

Hi,

I just wanted to say I am in the same position as you, had a scan 4 days ago and know the mirena is also incorrectly positioned. Had it put in at lap 2 months ago, have had pain ongoing ( from about a month ago it was worse, ended up in a&e twice , sent to gynae. Who blamed constipation but said would arrange an ultrasound. They never followed up so I have contacted them numerous times and went via pals for this scan).

I was told after the scan to speak to my gp. My gp said she deals with women's health and can put them in etc but feels due to other complexities and ongoing pain ( endo stage 4, adenomyosis and recent op) gynae should deal with it so said chase them again. She said depends on position and also if using for contraception. If slight out of position they will sometimes leave in as still giving off progesterone may help with endo but may not work as contraception. Obviously if severely malpositioned, very painful, at risk of uterus rupture then they will remove and offer a new one/ discuss other options. Because I have adenomyosis she says sometimes the womb is so distended it can be hard to get correct placement or it moves etc.

Frustrating isn't it?! I've tried multiple pop, dienogest, induced menopause in past so was told at lap either mirena or hysterectomy.not even sure if they remove it to have it replaced or not.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

❤ Sabrina xx

So sorry you’ve been in pain for so long! Push them hard for the appointment to review it, a GP should be able to remove it, you shouldn’t need to wait for a consultant. I had a bad experience with mirena, I also went to A&E after about a month due to pain and generally feeling unwell, they did bloods but no scan, told me all was fine. I persevered for 4 months and then had it removed (what relief!). About 6 months later a gynae (same one who’d put my mirena in) was preparing for ablation which he’d recommended and checking my uterus for suitability, found it was the wrong shape, arctuate/bicornuate! Which meant it would also have been the reason the mirena wasn’t seated properly and caused me months of pain! It works for a lot of women but not all, and is absolutely terrible for those of us it doesn’t! I hope you find relief xx

Mirena coil was also suggested for me (have have all the endo symptoms but lap found nothing 2 weeks ago). Despite my bad family history with the coil and the fact that my husband and I are at the point where we are starting to have conversations about possibility starting a family, my consultant was still very 'pushy' with the coil and kept suggesting it despite me expressing numerous times that I didn't want it. I was actually worried that she was still going to insert one while I was under for the lap. It seems to be common practise to try and cover up the symptoms rather than figure out and treat the cause. I hope you get the treatment you need to ease your pain :(
