Hi, recently GP perscribed me mefenamic Acid 500g 3 times a day, i was trying this for about 2 months and i noticed less pain and more "normal" periods , problem is that she didn't told me if I can eat this all the time ... like 1 year or so? Next gp that I asked about it , he said me that I must do test after half year for kidneys and liver..:/ and he not recommend use this all the time:/ anyone had experience with that acid? You can take this all the time? It's important for me because I'm waiting for next op, and endo for now is small and it's only pills that helping me. Will be grateful for any response 💛

Hello. I take it but not daily it can cause issues with your stomach so if you are taking it daily/long term its important that they are also giving you a stomach protector. Aswell as you ensuring its taken with a meal as this can help lessen the chances of the stomach side effects.

Thanks for reply ;) so when you take it? Before period?

I take it a few days before my period starts for about a week. And when I have flares that last longer than a couple of days.

Thank you💛Probably I will start use like this... and this probiotic then to stomach!

Not a probiotic. Your GP needs to prescribe you a Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) such as omeprazole to take each day you use the tablets.

:( I didn't know that, thank you!!!

I've been taking this regularly for pain and bleeding (along with Tranexamic Acid (bleeding), Tramadol (pain) and my GP had to add Omeprazole to my prescriptions because the Mefenamic Acid is hard on the stomach and digestive system. The Omeprazole counters the painful heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion I started to get as a result of the Mefenamic Acid. I would, from experience, recommend never trying to take it without food and if you do develop heartburn/indigestion that you speak to your GP about adding Omeprazole or similar to your prescriptions (I was up to take Zantac daily without it 100% helping when I asked for my GP intervention but I shouldn't have waited so long tbh). I have been on the Mefenamic Acid since 2016 and take it daily (barring the odd day where outside factors have prevented me from taking it).

I hope this helps 🙂

I was told take it two to three days before your period then stop when your period is over . I guess it’s different for everyone so I’d advise you call your GP and ask them

You're only supposed to take it whilst on your period. Not before and not after.

Actually for NSAID painkillers (ibuprofen, naproxen, mefenamic acid) they work best when started a day or two before you get pain. I didn't know this for years but it's on the endometriosis UK website.

I used to take Mefenamic acid 3 times a day as well but when I most recently went back to the gp to refill the prescription she told me that mefenamic acid has now been blacklisted and doesn’t recommend you take it at all. She said that it’s no more effective than ibuprofen and hold a lot more serious side effects.

Hello karooendo

I have been taking Mefenamic acid 500mg tablets for nearly ten years. I usually take it like normal pain tablets every four hours, but only when I have my periods.

I have taken it both with and without food, and personally, I have never had any problems with my stomach / heartburn etc.

It's interesting to read about some of the responses. I have not been informed by my GP, about it being on a 'back-list'; in fact my GP just gave me four packs of the stuff, and has never raised any concerns over stomach or kidney's.

Might need to bring this up at my next appointment ;-)

Yes, it's true , I had the same.. first gp didn't informed me, then I went second time and different gp said that I should not take this everyday because it's cause damage on kindney and liver :/ but he didn't know about endo much.. so I don't know what to think.. its helped me a lot when I was using all the time.. but probably I reduce only before period now. I don't have any side affect either:/ little bit dozy? Maybye? I must go to gp anyway for this protection on stomach so I ask another gp , hope this time woman :/ thanks for response tho ;)
