First period after injections

Hi all,

I had key hole surgery a week ago to remove all of my endo. I got told that it was the worst case my gyne had seen, as it was stuck to everything. I was down in theatre for just over 4 hours.

Im still recovering from this which is fine, but my question is i haven't had a period for about 9 months due to my gyne putting me on Prostat injections, which have sent me into temp menopause.

Now, im absolutely dreading having my first period in so Long. My gyne wants me to have the mirena coil in again, but the last time i had one i bled for 6 months straight so im a bit worried about having it again. They said my pain will start again once i start having my periods. When i first started my periods when i was a teenager, my mood swings were nasty. I was evil and at times violent towards family, and i don't want that to happen again now that i have a wife and are planning on having children in the future.

Has anyone got any good advise or experience on what to do? My work are the most least supportive about my condition and are not going to allow me to have a day off work for being in pain with my endo, as when i go back they will basically give me a shouting at! I work as a nurse

Ah no poor you with your work :(

Hmm, the first few periods after your lap will usually be quite bad' it'll feel like nothing's changed or it's worse; the body is healing and doesn't like all the moving around stuff that's been done to it so the uterus kind of goes into shock, which messes up cycles a little. It may feel like nothing has changed but it should get better in a few months.

You should have a follow up with your GP / specialist for two weeks; or when your sick note ends. If you haven't book one in and discuss period concerns, they can "extend" your sick note giving you time to cope with your first period.

Have your usual stuff on standby; painkillers, hot water bottle etc. Bear in mind your cycles may be out a little bit with surgery and your previous hormones. I don't know how that would change as to when you have the mirena fitted; I think that takes some time to adjust and get used to the side effects / have them wear off.

When I had my excision lap, I was signed off for three weeks then had my first period which wasn't nice so went to my GP and she signed me off for another two as she says the painful / heavy period is actually quite common after a lap.

Just some thoughts.

Hi farahziya,

Thank you for replying :)

I shall keep these all on board, with you saying my periods being all over the place, I've never had a regular cycle TBF, it's always been mixed up, so I've always had to carry around towels and pain relief wherever I go. Just not looking forward to my first period, as it sounds like it going to be horrible :(

Lots of hugs.

I empathize as my surgery was also 4 hours ish and the surgeon came out looking haggard.

I am so sorry your work is so unsupportive of. A medical establishment should know better. 😢

I've no advice other than to take as long as you can to recover you will want to go back sooner than physically you are ready to. I needed at least twice what they said after my surgery. I know it may not be possible financially but if you can take time out to just focus on healing for 6 or 12 months then do. I massively underestimated how big a deal my surgery was went back too soon pushed myself too hard to recover and (for a lot of complicated reasons) now am unable to work at all.

Meds are unique to us all (I didn't tolerate any) all I can say is trust your body you know what you can handle best. If you don't want to have a mirena don't. If you don't want to bleed push for a solution that works for you x

If you are suffering hormone imbalance is it worth seeing an Endocrinologist or getting hormone testing if you haven't already?

Just a few ideas. We're all so different feel free to disregard them.

Take care xx

Hi starry,

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I'm not around 3 weeks post op, and I've.found a lump on my tummy area, I've been to the doctor who's told me it maybe an infection or it could be something else! It's a small lump, which is hard to touch, but also painful :( .

I shall speak to my gynecologist about the birth control Stuff, if anything I will just want tablets as I don't want to have mirena coil.
