I’ve had the Mirena coil for almost 4 months now and I have been in excruciating pain almost every day since I got it. I’ve also had light bleeding almost every day aswell.
I went to the doctor who said it was in the right position and there was no infection. She gave me primolut tablets to stop the bleeding for about two weeks and ponstan which I’ve been taking three times a day with ibuprofen every day for pain. When I stopped taking the primolut tablets I got a period which was heavy and painful and I have had light bleeding every day since which was over a month ago.
She put me back on dianette pill which I didn’t really want to do and told me to stick with the coil for a few more months as she thinks it will get better. I’m so conflicted because I can’t go on with this pain but I’ve tried so many pills and nothing works so I don’t know what my next move would be.
I’ve been told it may be more painful to have the coil if you have never have kids so I’m wondering if thats why I’m in so much pain. The doctor mentioned I could have endometriosis a few months ago but I never had a laparoscopy, she suggested the coil for treatment instead. Should I have it removed or stick with it for longer and see if it gets better? Or has anyone experienced anything similar?

They say the coil takes six months to 'settle' and for some people it can be really useful! But I was in a similar position as you, I had my coil in for nine months and I have never been more miserable. I bled solidly for 6 weeks after it was put in, took northisterone for a couple of months to 'control' the bleeding but as soon as I stopped it I was bleeding constantly, all day every day for a good couple of months, through my A Levels too! I eventually went to my GP (as couldn't stand my gynaecologist at the time) and got another prescription of northisterone as I was going on holiday and didn't want to be bleeding and cramping. Took it for like 3 weeks and by the end of that I was bleeding through the northisterone. GP refused to take it out and referred me to another gynaecologist (thank god I've got private insurance so could book an appointment quickly) and after about 5 minutes talking he agreed to take it out. It was ridiculous, all those drs moaning about it for one man just to nod and take it out. That was pretty painful in itself, but worth it long term. Have you seen a gynaecologist about it, instead of just a GP? If you're in pain and bleeding it's obviously not working, and the medication isn't helping either.
Thanks so much, I know it’s so frustrating! My gynaecologist who put in the coil is booked up and can’t see me until the end of November so I’ve been going to my GP who thinks I should stick with it as she says it takes a while to settle aswell. I get where they are coming from and maybe it will get better but I’m just not sure if I’ll be able to hold out for that long with the pain I’m in right now I just can’t see it getting better any time soon!
Even though it's a bit of a wait I'd definitely get yourself booked in to see the gynaecologist who put it in! There's taking time to settle and there's causing you agony, and I think at this stage it's past settling. Definitely see what the gynaecologist says as I'm sure they'll be more inclined to listen to you than the GP is! Good luck xxxx
Thanks so much for replying, yeah I think you’re right I’ll wait to go back to my gynaecologist and hopefully will get it taken out then or get sorted , don’t think I can wait another few months just to see! Thank you xxx
