Waiting for first lap

Hi,

I got a date for my first laparoscopy yesterday for the 23rd and I’m really nervous! I’ve also struggled a lot this week with horrible cramps and lower back ache and nothing seems to help. It’s even hurting having a tampon in at the moment... any advice to help symptoms? xx

It is really scary having your first surgery, and the doctors seem to think it's nothing. But don't worry, its often a really quick procedure and the only pain you will get is from the gas build up, and that just feels like an exercise-induced cramp.

As for the pain, I'm trying to manage that at the mo too, but the best I can give you is try a hot water bottle, keep moving if you can and take some deep breaths, if you do yoga those breathing exercises have always helped me through the big ones. Focus on keeping all your muscles relaxed, especially your pelvic floor - if that spasms it makes it all worse. Plus I know this seems obvious, but stay hydrated! :)

Stay strong, you got this :) xx

Thank you! I work all week and it’s been quite stressful so I doubt that has helped. I will try and rest up over the weekend! Thanks for reassuring me about the surgery :) xx

Hey, I had my first surgery on Tuesday and it’s honestly fine. I have a massive fear of hospitals but the staff were so nice and I felt calm the whole time.

The gas pains in my shoulder are the worse thing atm as they won’t go but the lap was around an hour long and even being put to sleep felt nice as I was so tired haha xxx

Hi

It is scary going for your first lap but it is honestly not that bad. I’ve had two (my most recent being Wednesday) and had bad gas pains afterwards as they need to pump your stomach with gas to be able to operate. With good painkillers and peppermint tea this pain went, also invest in a v style pillow so you can sleep slightly elevated and the gas will be relived.

In terms of pain relief, I tend to have warm baths, hot water bottles and they can work at times.

Good luck! X

Thank you! You do see some bad experiences that people write so I’ve probably panicked myself and I’m worried about the outcome too. Will stock up on peppermint tea! xx

it is a difficult time but try not to worry yourself too much, it could be better than you think. Peppermint tea isn’t yum but it helped!

Hope it goes well :) x

Hi, I just had my first lap on Wednesday- I was really nervous too! But to reassure you I was absolutely fine- and luckily no pain since the op- I’ve had no gas pain- and no pain killers - the incisions are a bit sore but that’s it! I know I’ve been lucky but everyone is different- I’m sure you will be fine! Think positive- hopefully the op will ease your symptoms! Good luck x
