I am wanting to have a mirena coil put in but I'm in a lot of pain at the moment. Do you think I could have the coil put in under anaesthetic? I'm 16

I had mine in under anaesthetic but it was during a laparoscopy surgery.

My GP offered me it recently, I didn’t accept, but you don’t get if you don’t ask, worth talking to your doctor x

I’ve recently had to have mirena removed and replaced all of which was causing me anxiety. I got a small prescription for Diazepam which helped a lot and I got through it. At the appt they did say if it is too much then tell us to stop and we will arrange for it to be done under general anaeasthetic. Hope this helps? By the way the discomfort lasts seconds rather than pain for minutes. Good luck!

If you have the coil put in at a clinic they inject a little local anaesthetic into the cervix to help with getting it in, but will stop if you say it hurts or is uncomfortable.

If you have a general anaesthetic then its usually done in a hospital as an outpatient. The waiting list can be longer also I think doctors are more reluctant to remove it when it's been put in this way.

It's worth asking your gp / specialist, to find out what happens and what options they have available.

I had my copper coil put in about a year ago. Im not going to lie, i had local anaesthesia and it hurt a little, but the pains for the next few days were awful!

However, a year on, i would go through that pain again. As the copper coil has no hormones its amazing for me and my periods are so much less painful!

Hope this helps x

I had mine put in whilst I was having an operation. I told them previously that I wouldn't be comfortable being awake whilst it was happening because I can't tolerate the pain. It was fine with them - but then again I guess it was also due to the fact that I was going to have an operation that month so they had no problems doing it whilst I was under.
