Low calcium levels

Hi

I’ve had 2 laps for removal of cysts and endo. After the second lap I started having serious problems with my bowels. Went for tests inc sigmoidoscopy, scans and numerous blood tests. Doctor informed me that the cause was scar tissue on my bowel causing it almost to look like a balloon (she felt what she thought was a mass). Blood tests showed my calcium levels were worryingly low. I’m on adcal tablets for life. The doctor can’t tell me why this is happened.

My question to you ladies is have any of you also had this happen? Maybe due to endo removal?

Hi Laura XX Did your excision include a bowel shave and did you have chemical menopause ( eg zoladex) at all? Its worth doing your own research but i have read that there is a hormone association with calcium loss and that both GnRh treatment and natural menopause can cause it.

I didn't have this issue precisely but since my excision surgery and bowel shave I've definitely had all sorts of other digestive problems, have developed GERD and struggle to eat most things . I've been taking strong probiotics to try to improve my digestive function.

I expect you know this already if you've looked into calcium sources, but ironically milk isnt necessarily the best source because although it has plenty in it, it also contains things like retinol that hinder the bodys absorption of the calcium ( it's ranked net of absorption in 5th place in the paleo article) . Interestingly my nails have been far stronger since I increased my intake of leafy greens and tofu and dropped dairy.

These 2 articles below make some interesting points about vit d, k and magnesium, all vital for calcium absorbtion apparently. I was low in vit d when I was tested for all mine ( I also had zinc, magnesium, b12 done). Have you had your levels checked?

Hi thank you for the information, I will look into it.

I’ve been on adcal for low calcium for about 2 years now. I had mirena coil but had that removed. I’ve just finished my course of prostap now.

With bowel shave I’m not sure, never heard that mentioned after my laps x

With regards to the level checks no I haven’t. When I had been on the adcal for about 6 months they stopped the blood tests. So haven’t had anything else checked for about 18 months x
