Morning ladies. I was wondering if anybody uses the desogestrel pill (mini pill)? I have recently been put on it and I have been bleeding really heavily, also there have been lots of clots, is this normal? I was put on it due to severe migraines but the doctor told me it is endometrosis save.

Hi there I was just wondering how you were getting on with the desogestrel? I've been taking it for 4 weeks now. Had my period last week and it lasted much longer and the pain seemed more intense. Ended up in A&E and on oramorph to relieve the pain. Finally stopped now.

I did get an appointment through A&E to Acute Gynae Clinic who suggested a number of options while waiting for referral. My GP suggested I change to Provera (10mg 3x day) but after reading the side effects I decided to persevere with the desogestrel. At least I have an idea of what the next month may bring and can (hopefully!) plan for it.

Thanks

kim

Hello,

Thanks for getting in touch. I've been on desogestrel/cerazette for 15 months now and this is what I've found.

The first 2 periods I had were not fun, and it took several months for the breakthrough bleeding/spotting to settle down. I still experienced what I call 'in between periods endo pains' which I could manage with codeine.

I then had about 5 months with no bleeding at all which was totes amazeballs and which I hoped would continue forever more!

However, periods started again in December and, while the pain has been manageable, the bleeding has started to go back to very heavy again and taking longer to finish. I would note that at my last scan in July last year several fibroids were found so these may have a role to play in the return to increased bleeding that I have noticed.

I have had 2 proper endo flare ups during this time which were debilitating and which needed prescription codeine and oramorph to manage the pain. Strangely one occurred with no bleeding, and the other continued even when the bleeding had stopped. Horrid as they were, 2 in 15 months is a great improvement on one every month! I have Consultant appointment again in May so will discuss these with him; tje last time I saw him my periods had stopped so we were hoping all was going to stay that way.

The other thing is that have cleaned up my diet over the last 8-9 months and have been following an anti=inflammatory diet which has helped a lot, I think, and I no longer get any 'in between endo pains'.

I have not had any weight gain, mood swings, skin issues or any other side effects. The breakthrough bleeding/spotting is annoying but I can live with it!

Hope that helps!

Take care,

Kim

Yeah, I was also hoping all would be well once I started on the minipill. Unfortunately, it does take time so hang in there for a few months if you can (it was the same when I was on combo pill).

What endo pain where do u get it and when

I have Stage 4 endo & adenomyosis. My womb & bowel are fused, pelvis has numerous adhesions, also on bladder, & I had large endo cyst & left ovary removed some years ago. The pains I get: across my lower back down left hand side, occurs just before & during period also sometimes when period has stopped. Also get that pain with bowel movements, especially if I have eaten something that flares the pain. I also get pains down left & right hand side of pelvis with & without period. Also get sharp stabbing pains in bladder region at times. Without any hormonal control pains during period are debilitating & only Oramorph really helps to manage the pain. Hope that helps!

So did the mini pill help control your pains and did u have periods on it

Yes it has helped the pain a lot. Periods can be erratic on Desogestrel (and other POPs). I had a lot of spotting to start with, and also periods. Then no periods or anything for about 6 months, then periods again but no spotting. Now seemed to have stopped again! Everyone is different I guess. Also, I cannot say whether or not the fibroids and adenomyosis may have been causing the periods to start again. Hope that helps!
