Desogestrel mini pill/'bleeding'/smear concerns

Hello ladies,

So I'm on the mini pill continuously due to excruciating daily pain and to hopefully get a little break from the pain and stop my periods for 6 months ( I did get put on the injections prostap but couldn't cope cope at all and lasted 2 rounds due to debilitating pain in joints).

For the first month I was absolutely fine and saw a slight ease in pain with no period. The second month, pain lessened further but I started to spot and loose little clots. Thinking it was just a reduced period. But I have not stopped since. It's like a constant dark old blood looking on the tissue whenever I wipe, sometimes small clots and sometimes none. I'm having even less flares and not in daily pain anymore although similar joint pain as the injection, just more bearable.

I was due a smear and obviously can't have one whilst I am 'bleeding'. I really am conscious I have been called for this (Christmas time) as I had a change in cells last tear.

Has anyone had this before? Is this normal? Should I go back to the gyne? Do you think I could still have the smear?

Your advice would be gratefully received.

Hi, I had a similar experience with the mini pill, Noriday last year. I had my smear booked and constant light bleeding. I spoke to the nurse and she was happy to do it. She did say results could be inconclusive due to the bleeding, but they came back normal which was great. My pill was changed to Norgeston as Noriday stock was hard to source, since changing I've had 3 months of no bleeding which was great, but now pain and light bleeding again, but bright red this time. Hoping it'll resolve and not be like it was before.

Thank you, I know my last one she couldn't do because I was bleeding very lightly, so was assuming still the same. But it's constant now, and some days more 'dark old blood' (??) than others so really hard to figure out. I think I am going to ring and speak to them next week as worried about missing it

Ye mine was like that and she was okay to do it, although wasn't that happy but wanted to get it over and done with. Good luck. Hate the 'breakthrough' bleeding with the pill! Going away next week too so hoping it'll stop. 🙏

Funny enough, I went on holidays just before I started this round of 'trying things' and it was the most well and pain free I have felt in years!!! I had a period as well and I had no pain at all...go figure?! Enjoy your break and thank you again x

the mini pill can take time to settle, and not uncommon to have random bleeding. Give it 3 to 6 months to see if it settles.

Than you. Yes I have been on it since Christmas and only a short trial but maybe it will get extended. I'm just a little worried about not being able to have my smear for this 'bleeding' and clots.

I was on the mini pill for years as a young adult an loved it.But after having both children I struggled with it. Bleeding a lot more frequently.

I was advised to double up for a couple of months, but by that point I had given up and came off it completely.

But it may be worth a visit to GP - they may advise something similar till the clotting stops.

Thank you, I think I am going to call them next week and get some advice. My periods despite age, endo and pcos are pretty regular and I know where I am at in my cycle. But taking the pill to stop my period for 6months, but now actually bleeding/spotting and clots every day since beginning Feb has thrown me ha! 🙈
