Lap booked for Thursday...

Hi all,

I've got a laparoscopy booked for Thursday to investigate whether my ovarian cyst is as a result of endometriosis or not. I've had symptoms for a couple of years but always put it down to bad periods. Since discovering my cyst through an ultrasound I've been suffering daily with bloating and stomach aches on top of regular abdominal pains.

I think I'm ok about having the surgery on Thursday, I am very happy with my consultant, he has been fantastic to date and I'm generally a calm person however I don't really know what to expect because my last (and only) operation was 22 years ago!

I don't think I've given too much thought to how I will feel if I'm diagnosed with endo however for now I'm focusing on getting through the operation with minimal anxiety.

Any advice or tips for lap surgery and recovery are much appreciated.

Thank you :-)

Good luck for Thursday, just take it easy, you know the drill, won't be any different to the first 22 years ago...but do have a light menu set up for the day as passing food can be a struggle 🙌🏼🙋🏻🙏🏼☺️🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀

Sorry I should have said my operation 22 years ago was to remove my tonsils!! I've just re-read my post and realised it sounds like this is my second laparoscopy. I've not had a laparoscopy before.

Thank you for the advice!

Ha in that case, make sure you have a week off, plenty liquids, peeing will be a tad uncomfortable if not sharp and painful, very bloated and belly will be filled with gas depending on what type of lapo. You have. Comfy expandable waisted clothes or larger shirts xxx

Great thank you! I hadn't read anywhere about going to the loo after surgery so that's good to know. I'm used to feeling bloated so I'm hoping that bit should be manageable. X

Buy some peppermint water or peppermint tea for you to have after surgery the gas pain can be so bad and severe in shoulders and difficulty to burp too the peppermint water is good well worth buying prior to surgery xx

I love peppermint tea and drink it regularly so that won't be a problem at all, I always have peppermint tea in. I've not heard of peppermint water but might try it. X

I had lap today as an emergency, I had a Mri Aprox 8 weeks ago which showed only small cysts 3weeks ago went from routine app and was admitted as emergency found 6by5.4 cm cyst over weekend pain has been horrendous so was admitted as emergency though scan showed cyst was 1cm, all very confusing and upsetting, best advice as I suffer from bad anxiety and being low, mix with fellow patients on the ward for the first time I was able to stay on the ward without to much anxiety as I spoke to all girls in same positions and others not and we all helped each other there or surgeries and anxieties rambling as still out of it with pain relief so wanted to say here to help listen and support you at any time xx

Sorry to hear you were rushed in. Hope the operation went well. Do you know whether your cysts are due to endo?

My first scan was in September and it showed a couple of cysts about 1.4cm, I had a second scan in November and it showed one cyst 5.9cm on my left ovary. My left ovary couldn't be seen on the scan because of the cyst. A week prior to my second scan I had the paramedics out because I was in so much pain, the paramedics administered painkillers and said it was likely to be a UTI not a ruptured cyst so I chose not to go in to hospital and rested for a few days.

Thank you for your advice and support, hopefully we can help each other over the coming days. Take care and I hope your recovery goes well. X

How you feeling today Really hope pain is not at worst tonight? The second lap today was not a success? I was told before going for surgery scan was clear then other specialist endo does not always show on Mri I was told in Feb 2016 after lap yeah I had endo so confusing as was told after today lap the endo was there though not active so no treatment was done lone I'm at home after very bad experience with my recovery nurse confused weepy and out of it, the nursing staff on ward were amazing, I think the consultant I had to today wasn't confident to do treatment ? Isn't all endo scar tissue and bits so would never be active or am I being stupid really really sore and unsettling tonight xxxx

The pain has been dull and constant for a couple of weeks, I'm suffering a bit from dizziness but I'm not sure whether I'm anaemic. At my pre-op in December I was told I was slightly anaemic, I had my bloods done again yesterday.

I'm pleased to hear your ward nurses were good, it makes a huge difference. I've got confidence in my consultant so I'm hoping plenty of reassurance from him and the nurses will make the experience as pleasant as it can be. Fingers crossed.

Try to get some sleep tonight, you'll hopefully be feeling better over the next couple of days once you've processed what has happened and your anaesthetic leaves your system. X

Hi. I had my lap 3 weeks ago & found endometriosis. I've always had painful periods but always thought it was normal. I found it difficult maybe for the first few days, but there is so much advice and support out there. I've cut down my gluten and sugar dramatically since the op and I've had nearly no bloating & I love bread and sweets lol the diet for endometriosis is pretty straight forward. Since the op I've had a period too and I had 20 mins of mild pain on the first day compared to 3 days crippled in bed.

For the op I recommend having heat packs for your shoulder.. I had about 4/5 days of shoulder pain. And loads and loads of rest. My scars are Tiny & kept my dressings on for 2 weeks. Showering is fine. Make sure u also have enough pain relief tablets for the first few days and I kept them regularly in my body so I could heal and have no pain. The op took 1 hours.. could get op and walk around after. The aneststic made me abit sick that night but everyone is different.

Hope it goes well & urnrecovery isn't too long xxx

I assumed it was normal too, when I was told there was a possibility of endometriosis after having my first scan I had never heard of it before. I googled the symptoms and soon realised I was experiencing most of them. The bloating and constant stomach ache is the thing that sometimes gets me down. I feel like I always look pregnant! I have an ok diet but I think it's something I'll have to address after my operation.

I haven't given much consideration to the shoulder pain even though I've read about it so I'll make sure I'm prepared just in case. I'm hoping I will be given an anti-sickness injection or tablet because I don't cope well with sickness. I think that is my main worry at the moment which is ridiculous and hopefully easily sorted.

Thanks for the advice and I'll report back. When were you told it was endometriosis? Was it straight after your operation or did you have to wait? X

How did your lap go yesterday? Hope it all went ok. I was on both occasions told straight after lap that it endo and what they did. Hope your ok and not to painful xxxx

Hi,

Yes I'm ok thanks. The op was fine and I feel better than I thought I would. I've had a few visitors today and maybe overdone it because I'm exhausted now but the pain is manageable and I'm used to feeling bloated so that doesn't bother me. I was diagnosed with stage 3 endo, they drained my cyst and check my tubes with a dye. They didn't have to remove my ovary either which is great news. I'm not sure if they removed some of the endo or not, guess I'll find out when I have my follow up appointment. How are you? X

Brilliant you feeling better than you expected, they have done a lot on surgery Hun so take it easy rest and let everyone run about after you. Have they given you coil or pill to try?

Sore today and belly button incision was weepy so went to doc all good gave me inodine dressing and mepore to keep it dry so bugs don't grow and get infection. Some discomfort down below though gp had good look about and said everything looks good, mentioned Botox injections as Everytime my urine tested says blood protein and licoste though when it sent to lap clear something about endo and bladder that they can use Botox for to stop cystitis symptoms? Never heard of it xxxxx

MrsK1 profile image
MrsK1 in reply toDeb1511

No not given me anything to try, the nurse said I can discuss how to manage the endo with my consultant when I see him in 8 weeks time. I think because I don't feel as bad as I thought I would I've probably done a bit too much today and now my body is reminding me to slow down.

I've heard of Botox for urinary symptoms because my Dad has prostate cancer and had the operation to remove his prostate leaving him with incontinence, he has been offere Botox as a possible treatment of his conditions. X

Yeah bodies are good at telling us that lol, glad you feeling lot better than you thought, my consultant said for me to start revigon straight away to stop symptoms and try it for 6 months.

Sorry to hear about your dad shame you having tough time all round,

She said it could be endo on bladder causing urine infection, cystitis symptoms ?

Thanks for super quick response Hun and hope you have a bath to relax after your busy day xxxx
