Hello, I was referred back in November and saw a gynaecologist in February. She talked to me about my symptoms and then did an internal exam. She used a speculum to first have a look and then she had a feel internally. She has now referred me to an endometriosis specialist for surgery

Please can I ask how the internal exam went? Did you go straight back to work that day? Was it awkward/painful? Thats good though! I hope you get an answer, not knowing is the worst thing!

It was uncomfortable, but I have always found internal examinations uncomfortable due to having endometriosis. It wasn't awkward as the gyne doctor was lovely and made me very relaxed. It's no different to having a smear test really. I was uncomfortable the following day but it was only a dull ache which resolved with pain relief. I was told there and then that I had endometriosis, the doctor said she could actually feel it on my pelvis which is why I've been referred to the specialist x

Please can I ask what symptoms you get?

I get pain every month around the time of my period that is so severe I can barely move, talk, or do anything. I had extremely heavy periods when I was younger so I had a coil fitted to help with that. The pain comes on suddenly, it's cramping in my pelvis but extremely strong, going through into my back, a pressure going down into my bum and down my legs. The doctor explained to be it's as though my body is having contractions. I've not had any children but if you have then relate it to contractions in labour. The pain makes me feel sick and exhausted x

I've had this done several times. First time I had just been admitted to a ward because I needed an emergency laparoscopy. So don't really remember that, was too drugged up by then.

Second time I was fully aware, I felt quite embarrassed. But it was over quickly. And while the doctor had his finger down there... I had a lovely nurse talking to me and I got to hold her hand. We ended up talking about nail polish lol.

I went straight to work afterwards. But everyone is different.

I've had a few intervals when I've been referred at various times. Generally you have a nurse with you. I went back to work straight after. hope this helps. Try not to worry.

Hello, I'm also on the journey to get a diagnosis. Last year, I had to have my scheduled smear test repeated, due to bleeding during the examination, they're always so uncomfortable. Haven't had another examination, but passed large clots/fleshy masses at the end of last year. Dr prescribed pain meds, referred me for ultrasound pelvic exam, and changed contraceptive pill again.

The internal exam is quite routine, and if you can handle it, it's worthwhile. Unfortunately it is something I refused last time Dr wanted another look, just because I'm scared, and it was so sore last time. Ultrasound this Saturday, hoping to know more then.
