I’m having another internal examination soon but this time with an endo specialist doctor, and I’m worrying because it’s very likely I’ll be bleeding! It won’t stop and they keep lasting weeks at a time...
It might be a really silly question, but will they mind doing an internal whilst I am bleeding?? I’m sure they see it all the time but wondering wether I should re-book or let them know.
Thank you!! Xx

When I went for an ultrasound before I could have my referral, it was initially planned to have an internal scan but didn’t. The nurse said they don’t mind about bleeding as it doesn’t change anything. I’m sure it is the same for any internal examination. I wouldn’t worry about it 😊 x
Thanks for your message! Okay that’s reassuring, I’d imagine they wouldn’t mind then... at the end of the day they probably shouldn’t be working in gynea if they’re scared of a bit of menstrual blood 😉xx
I have received letters about gynaecology appointments that have said something to the effect of they may want to do an exam and that if bleeding they can still proceed but if I felt uncomfortable they could rebook.
They will have plenty of women coming through that have non-stop bleeding or irregular bleeding and should not have an issue examining you unless you are not happy with it.
Hi, thanks for your reply! Okay that makes me feel better, I suppose it’s something everyone would be worried about but I’m glad it won’t affect results etc. Xx
I completely understand worrying about it - I often use to fret about booking smears because I am so irregular. I imagine that not knowing affects a lot of women, because there is not enough talk or education about what to do in these types of situations.
I saw a gynaecologist after being in A&E and I was bleeding heavily at the time. I was completely mortified he needed to do an exam but he told me that women usually are referred to gynae because they’re bleeding so this is normal for him. That made me feel better.
I actually had my consultany try and insist on doing my internal exam while i was at one appointment and said that the fact i was bleeding was not an issue, i was already in so much pain and discomfort i ended up getting her to agree to book me in for after i finished but so long as you feel comfortable enough the fact that you are bleeding wont make any difference 🙂
Hi, okay that’s interesting, it’s nice to know we have a choice in it then. I’m pretty much bleeding non-stop so I think I’ll just have to get it over and done with.. thanks so much for your reply xx
Im sure theyve seen it all before haha but if you do feel nervous/uncomfortable just make sure you let whoever is doing the scan know. I told my consultant i was nervous as at my previous internal scan i had a really bad experience and then she was great with me - told me exactly what was going on and kept checking i was ok
That’s reassuring, I’m quite nervous because my last internal wasn’t nice at all, the gynaecologist was pretty rough and didn’t listen to me when I told her it really really hurt... hopefully this one will be a better experience. Xx
Im sorry to hear that, my first one was the same they just kept saying ‘well it will be done quicker if you just let me get on’ etc. but honestly just mention you had a bad experience and hopefully this one will be better and you will have someone more understanding like i did luckily the second time around x
Yeah that’s what she was saying to me too! And she’d said at the beginning to tell her if it hurt, but when I did she just completely ignored me... the nurse said because this doctor is a specialist he’s used to working with women in pain so it’ll be okay.. thanks for your messages!! Xx
I had my internal examination a few days and I was bleeding. Although I felt a little awkward the Consultant clearly had no problem with it. Just let them know beforehand if you do decide to go ahead with the appointment. Personally I am really proud of myself for getting the examination when bleeding. I am in the most pain whilst bleeding so thought probably the best time for someone to take a look.
