Has anyone had surgery since being diagnosed with CKD?

Does it affect your kidney GFR or kidney function?

I am CKD 3.

GFR 53.

Creatine 1.32.

I am scheduled for a hysterectomy and I have discussed it both with my Renal Dr and my Gynecologist.

They both think that it should not affect my numbers.

I am concerned abt the pain level because I am no longer able to use NSAIDS.

However I would like to hear personal stories from the people that are actually dealing with this on an everyday basis.

We are the experts in my opinion.

Hi Margie5967. Because I have stage 3 CKD and diabetes type II I was not allowed a hysterectomy. I was having severe problems with some large fibroids. Instead last year I had a uterine fibroid embolization. I stressed to the surgeon about my kidney problem and the fact that I could not take NSAIDS and Aspirin and they were very helpful and talked me through the procedure. Instead of Morphine which could harm the kidneys they gave me another painkiller called Oxy something. I had the operation and my kidneys have remained at stage 3. Hope this helps.

Thank You.

I have considered a UFE.

How painful was the process?

And how long did it take you before you felt better?

Not painless at all. I had to lay on an X-ray table for an hour while the arteries were filled with plastic particles. I could feel a whooshing sensation when the dye was administered. The nurse kept telling me to press the pain killer but hardly used any at all. I was up walking about the next morning and was sent home. Had two weeks off work and you have a gripey stomach pain but that was about all.

Wow.

I have googled the procedure so much I think I have made myself nervous.

I’m concerned abt the sand or particles they inject.

Do they dissolve?

And I thought we couldn’t use contrast dye with CKD.

I have a low tolerance for pain.

Like you I was concerned about the contrast dye but they used something that would not be harmful to my kidneys. Never felt the particles and I suppose they just stop the blood getting to the fibroids so they cannot get any bigger, The fibroids then start to dissolve. It did not hurt. There are no stitches or anything.

Did you symptoms improve or disappear?

Yes my symptoms got better. I am no longer anaemic, look a better colour and am no longer fainting all the time. It is the best decision I ever made. Good luck with your op.

Hi Margie5967,I have CKD, and since July I have had a hysterectomy and a partial knee replacement, they managed my pain with paracetamol and codeine, this managed the pain quite well. Following the hysterectomy I was catheterised and ended up with a UTI, successfully treated with antibiotics. A couple of weeks ago I ended up with an infection and as a result had spell in hospital on intravenous antibiotics, as far as I am aware it has not affected my kidney function.
