I am 69 - so now I've been told I am stage 3 CKD. I have had all the typical symptoms (high BP, anemia, always freezing (i live in FL), gastro, low energy, ...) I am innodated with many suggestions on how to slow the progression with diet, suppliments, special tea.... I am already on meds for BP, A-fib, heart rate, Eliquis. I am trying to avoid taking any more meds and I would like to learn more about pro-active measures to slow the progression? Any miracle potions? Any advice for a newbie?

New to CKD - HELP

Hi mamarose. I know that many doctors or nephrologist say not to worry in stage 3. I’m by far an expert in this area but I have learned a few things. If you are in stage 3, the number one thing is to drink plenty of water. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables especially organic. Cut down on red meat. Protein from salmon is good. Keep track of your numbers and eat according to those numbers. For example if your potassium is high, don’t eat potatoes, bananas etc.. Good luck. I know initially it is a scary thing but it doesn’t mean that kidney failure is in your future.
Tons of water, try not to eat processed foods, no pizza/avacado/tomato. Not too much protein. and then more water. You can raise your GFR, but always include your dr in you diet
plans. Best of luck.
I too live in Florida, and am a senior. I was diagnosed at CKD stage3b. My Doctor put me on a CKD diet , so limited to phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and protein. The diet has helped me. I too have other medical problems related to aging.
We face the same conondrum. I am tired of the bruising and bleeding. They say just to eat a healthy diet such as DASH or Mediterranean. Drink a lot of water, DO NOT take NSAIDS. Exercise and keep an eye on your numbers. Not what we want to hear, we want a solution and it's uncurable. Finally, after 3 years, I wrangled an appointment with a nephrologist in early May. If I get any better advice, I will share it with you.
Hi MamaRose69 not sure if they have different ideas in the Uk but apart from the advice already given one thing that was drummed into me by both dietitian and Renal Consultant was to cut out Salt. When shopping it’s a bit of a nightmare at first but once you get used to it you get into a rhythm. There is very little food with no salt but not eating any processed food helps. There are some foods I have found that is marked as low salt so I do sometimes treat myself to the occasional low salt I have been CkD 3 now for 5 years.
Good luck
