I had a CT scan yesterday which involved having a dye injection in the vein. I am at stage 3 CKD. GFR 38
I was told that the dye can affect the kidney's, and the Radiographa said for me to have another blood test soon, to check my kidney function. Has anyone had one of these scans ?

my hubby is due to have a ct angiogram which they say the same thing but in his case he's on fluid restriction being on dialysis he won't be able to flush out the dye they say won't affect the kidneys as already gone but they're still telling him he needs to drink the amount they are saying! other departments don't seem to have much of an understanding i don't think! hope you get on ok with it all
When I had my CT scan they didn't give me the dye for that very reason. I'm sure it's okay as they are experts in their field but I would certainly mention it at your next discussion with your renal consultant just to be on the safe side in case you need another one in the future.
I'm stage 4 (16%) and had an mri scan with contrast dye last week. It was asked for by the transplant team and no one seemed concerned. I did drink a bit more after the test to try and flush it out - I did however have a horrible headache for two/three days after the test and my kidney did hurt/ache more to had usual.
I have had a really bad headache since the scan which is unfortunate for me as I have Giant Cell Arteritis, which causes headaches in the arteries in the head, I have had to up my steroid dose a little just incase I get a flare . My scan was for liver and pancreas, I also have been diagnosed with large gall stone. It never ends!!!!
I'm waiting for a kidney Pancreas Transplant and last week had a Myo view (heart) but they injected radiation instead of dye . I was fine afterwards I was just told to avoid children and pregnant woman for 24 hours !
When I had to have a scan I rung up and refused to have it done for that very reason. In the end, when I spoke to my renal consultant, he told me they wouldn't use dye, and I just had a scan to see what was going on. I have had scans before with the isotope and have had no concerns with that.
Like everyone else says, just drink plenty, but have your bloods done soon, so they can check.
Hi I went to Birmingham transplant unit for my scan and was told I should never have the dye without being really well hydrated before and after the procedure. I was given a litre of intravenous saline before mine and my bloods were fine after hope this helps.
