My HbA1c has gone from 46 to 70. My Dr. says I need to start Metformin, but I am reluctant. I hate taking meds - but I'm not stupid. so I will if I have to.

Can you share your experiences of Metformin please? It actually looks like a good medication when I have a wee look around the internet.

I like your approach of resolving diabetes without medications. However, the HbA1c number 70 mmol/mol at this time is rather high. I would suggest you go for medications as per Doctor's advice to avoid possible complications and make a pledge to come off medications asap by making dietary and lifestyle changes.

I am a type 2 diabetic maintaining non-diabetic blood glucose numbers ( HbA1c of 36) by low carb diet and no medications. All delicious food all the time. T2D for me has been a blessing in disguise.

Just look at my typical menu for a day:

Breakfast: Fried Egg, Bacon, Sausages and lots of green veg salad. No bread, No baked beans and No fruit juice. Just water and tea without sugar.

Lunch: Grilled chicken + green vegetables

Dinner: Salmon/Beef/Lamb/ + green vegetables.

Above is just a brief description. There are more details to consider if one decides to follow this route.

I have been taking metformin for 6 years now. Never had any issues with it. I modified my diet to low carb as well. I started on 4 a day now on oner a day. All going well numbers under control. Exercise and diet and a little metformin is working for me.

Thank you for your replies, I think I will go ahead and take it..I have a very healthy diet and lifestyle but I could cut most of my carbs down. I cycle, walk , swim and do yoga. I am coeliac so don't eat gluten.. But yes 70 HbA1c is pretty high

Hi I've been taking Metaformin for 2 years now. I have altered my diet to low carb but my blood sugar fluctuates a lot & and they don't know why? One thing I would say is make sure you take your tablet with a meal, as it can have an adverse effect on your bowel movement's it certainly makes me regular! If I forget at meal times to take it then take it later I get really bad stomach pain. Good luck

comedance2me - is there a strong history of diabetes in your family? have your doctors considered that your diabetes might not be type2? eg LADA or MODY? It may be a form of diabetes that is nearer to type 1 and so responds better to different drugs. My mother and brother have a MODY variant and neither of them were unable to control their blood sugars using metformin.

I have been on Metformin for over 5 years to help treat my type2 diabetes and it works great. My doctor has told me over and over it is the one medication he swears by and it is the best one out there for treating diabetes. I have also went to a low carb diet to reduce my blood sugar readings and A1c. Good Luck ! 👍
