I have just been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and have started on Metformin. Was just wondering has anyone experienced any pain in the chest, shoulders or ribs when put on this medication? I am in agony and can barely move.

Thank you. Caroline

i had nausea for the first week and since then no problem.

the side effects you are experencing sound sever. i would suggest you make an urgent appointment with either your Doctor or diabetic nurse and seek medical advice.

if you can't get a GP appointment I would suggest discussing with the pharmacist who dispensed the medication - they are often more aware of side-effects and possible interactions with other medication that you may be taking than the GP will be.

I had painful diarrhoea when taking that drug. I took it for a few weeks but wish I had stopped earlier. My blood sugar level was very high when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I brought it down in to a normal range through following a low carb healthy diet and swimming five times per week in four months. I also did things to get my stress levels down.

Are your numbers okay with swimming?

Absolutely. I don't need to check myself every day/week. I was prescribed glicizide which can lead to hypos and weight gain - I chose not to take it. It turns out I did not need medications. After reading one of your posts I am walking more. I am going to have to exercise and be very careful for the next three years and beyond. If your blood sugar levels are in the normal range consistently for three years type 2 diabetes is thought to be in remission.

That’s great news.😀 Thank you for letting us know. When do you go walking?

I prefer to go for a walk when it's not belting it down with rain. I love sunny, blustery days.

That's great! Most of my walking is done when I'm working for 5 hours a day.
