HBA1C of 6.7

I am 46, Male and working professinal. I was diganozed with Typ2 Diabetest 5 -7 years back. My HbA1C level is 6.7 and I am able to maintan through lifestyle and exercise and without any medecines. Is this a good control and am I away from any complications ? Do I need to take a medicine?

Your HbA1c of 6.7 is in diabetic range. First line of action should be dietary management. You need to reduce carbohydrate consumption preferably 50 gm or less in a day. Deficit in calories should be compensated with healthy fat. Continue with your exercise. Your numbers will drop.

Thanks Praveen. You mean 50 gms of Carbs a day. Isnt't it too low?

Please ask your doctor before you change your diet to be on the safe side of things. No one wants anyone getting sick or worse.

Yes, it is low compared to what we are used to consume. However, we the diabetics can not process carbohydrate as efficiently as non-diabetics. We should not eat carbohydrate more than we can tolerate. 50 gm that I suggested is an approx number. Once your BS number comes down, you can gradually increase to a level suitable for your metabolic requirements. Your meter will guide you.

My carb consumption is between 25 and 40 gm which keeps my BS in non-diabetic range. You have to experiment and see what suits you. Reduction in carb consumption is the most potent approach to reduce blood sugar. Medicine should be the last resort if possible. Please let me know if you need any assistance.

I totally agree with Praveen55. We do actually dictate BSL both FBS and PPBS from what we eat or drink. Maintain regular exercise will not only control BSL and improve IR sensitivity but benefit the overall health. Each diabetic needs to put more effort to control BSL with lifestyle as it's safe, effective and sustainable. Those who require medications and/or insulin should also maintain healthy lifestyle especially control CARB intake.

I am sure with your age and current A1C of 6.7%, you would be able to control BSL naturally. Keep it lower than 6%. Making positive changes with lifestyles may not be easy as it's required a good self-control and disciplinary but trust me it is worth it. All the best 😃
