Hi matru13-ashram ,

Emmer wheat has low glycemic index. The fiber content of this wheat is high. I eat chapatis made of emmer wheat almost daily. You will really like its taste(prefer organic). Broken wheat khichdi or upma tastes really good as well. Papaya is good. The glycemic load of a one cup of papaya is around three. It has lots of fiber.

May i know your Hba1c levels, please? Thank you for guiding me. I will also start emmer wheat. Should we add like soya, methi, barley and channadhal before making atta? Please let me know your way of using emmer wheat.

My HbA1c is 6.7 currently. It came down from 14+ in a year.

I use emmer wheat in the below ways.

1) Boiled Emmer wheat (around 50-60 grams) as a substitute for rice in a traditional south indian meal along with either Sambar or Rasam. I have this daily along with 3-4 spoonful of ghee.

2) Emmer wheat atta flour: I use this flour for preparing dough for my chapati. I add 2 teaspoons of kala jeera, ajwain, kasoori methi and jeera when preparing this dough. I don't add any other ingredients. But you are free to experiment by add soya flour, etc

3) Broken emmer wheat/ emmer wheat dalia : I boil this along with plenty of vegetables like carrot, beans, peas to prepare kichdi or upma. This tastes amazing.

4) You have options such as emmer wheat shevai for preparing upma, kichdi

5) Emmer wheat sooji rava upma is another option worth trying

6) I buy emmer wheat puffs or chiwda as a snack

Any fruits with black seed is good!

Move away from wheat for few weeks, eat chickpeas, peanuts, sweet potatoes, green veg, roasted plantain, roasted casa and many more.

Use a home Glucometer to monitor your blood sugar levels at one and two hours mark after your meals. You will come to know which foods spike your blood sugar.

You are saying you use low carb diet, is millet low carb? It seems to have 64 gm net carb and 8.5 gm dietary fibre per 100 gm. Anyway, let Glucometer decide if it is good for you.

Information on macros are available easily on-line on most of the food items.

In parts of India, emmer wheat (खपली गाहू in Maharashtra) is grown as a drought- and stress-resistant wheat variety with some work ongoing to improve yields, as a result of increased interest in this variety due to possible value for diabetics.

As with all varieties and hybrids of wheat,[25] emmer is unsuitable for people with gluten-related disorders, such as celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity and wheat allergy sufferers, among others.

What do you mean by emmer wheat and how is it different from our regular wheat?

DIAINDIA ,

1) Sharbati wheat (Triticum aestivum) considered the best for making chapatis, is the most commonly available wheat. Glycemic Index of this type of wheat is around 60.

2) Emmer wheat or Farro is a type of wheat that is rich in fiber is found most suitable for a diabetic(T2D). GI of emmer wheat/wheat flour is around 40-45.

The quantity of food control is the key to reduce HbA1c!

Do you know Sandy it’s interesting you say that because although I have cut out all snacks and most (😁) treats I really have cut back on how much I eat! On a recent X-Pert Diabetes course I went on we were told that little and often is not necessarily the solution any more and that a selection of diet types was the way forward, one of which was low carb high fat. LCHF! Also breakfast was not essential- in fact since your BSL goes up in the late night in anticipation of the day ahead having a breakfast MAY drive your BSL number even higher.

Now I am NOT a medical person in any way shape or form so please check out what I say for yourselves. You can be referred on the X-Pert Diabetes course by the Diabetes nurse at your GPs - if you are in the UK. It is 15 hours long spread over 6 weeks. Best of all it is free and you get a free copy of the X-Pert Diabetes handbook! Well it’s not really the best of all because the course is fantastic- maybe a little too much on the Biology type of things for me (never having had a biology lesson in my life!) but hey ho, I expect others liked that bit 😁.

My own experience was I tried to follow the LCHF diet with a modicum of success! To be honest I ignored the high fat element but just didn’t bother if I had full fat milk and that sort of thing! About 75% of the time I met the Carb target of less than 130. I haven’t had breakfast since I started because I don’t need it. I lost nearly a stone and now lie bang in the middle of the (ridiculous imho) BMI scale. My HbA1c value after 4 months went to the lowest ever seen by my GP practice for a diagnosed Type 2 diabetic 👍. Coolio or what 😁. And I was told no more Metformin. Yippee.

I stress this is just my experience so please don’t criticise me too much hehe 😁 if I have got some things wrong!

Thanks. 👍

Thank you. I have me own experience!. At my time of DT2 finding there were no educational classes! I di my own research and controlled my Hba1C.

because I am classified as DY2, my HbA1c reading are look at and al they say is it is under control. My DT2 check is what my body is telling me from what I learned. If I do not get up in the middle of the night to go to toilet then I am OK.

I am enjoying living one life. only time will tell.

That’s really good! 👍. Under control is great! Do you have any idea about why going to the toilet is important? I mean have you asked or have your own idea? I get up for the toilet probably twice a night so I’m interested! 😁

Well thank you! 😁👍. We were told that the previous preaching re low fat is now passe and eventually this new message will be promulgated to all practitioners - hope 😁👍.

When I first started it was very high, then it came down to 40. My GP practice now says my reading of near 50 is OK, as I am classified as diabetic it is under control.

I am happy with it and no medication.

I go for once a year blood test, eye screening and foot check. I maintain my weight, I watch what I eat and drink, when I go out for dinner or to family and friend I do give in to good home cooked food!!! Only time will tell. When I lost weight and got every thing under control, I wrote a A4 page to NHS health check on how life style change helped me.
