My HbA1c reduced at last

Hi All,

I have been diagnosed T2D since Feb 2018. My HbA1c has reduced to 5.9 % from previous value of 6.2%(6 months ago). Some interesting points to note are the below.

1) My weight has increased by 700-800g

2) Had 2-3 spoons of palm sugar along with milk daily in the morning

3) Had around 6 spoons of honey with ceylon cinnamon powder daily

4) Had 1-2 dates almost daily as bed time snack

5) Had hand-pounded unpolished rice for 5-6 days in last 3 months though my staple food is Emmer wheat meal and Emmer wheat chapati.

In spite of all the above, my HbA1C reduced. The only thing which i never missed is daily 1 hour walk and never took stress.

Can we conclude that Emmer wheat has started doing its magic?

Please provide your thoughts.

P.S: I do not take any medicines

sandybrown ,

Thanks for your response.

That's a very question. I buy a specific brand of palm sugar from pprfp (pprpf.org/Org/Intro.html).

Sure, let me wait for one year test.

Excellent. I would attribute greatly to your 1 hr walk. That helps a lot. I also do 1 hr - 8000 steps - 4 miles everyday and if possible 3 stairs! I am on medication but my Hba1c at 6.2.

barani19 profile image
barani19Administrator in reply to mohan1212

mohan1212 ,

Thanks for your response. As my HbA1c has reduced without change in physical activity( i do 1 hour walk almost daily for last 2-3 years) and no major changes in my diet, i have a guess long wheat has an impact.

Emmer wheat is very good. Apart from walking, you can do some stretching exercises/yoga also. And include millets like kambu/pearl millet and all the meals should include veggies

barani19 profile image
barani19Administrator in reply to mistidahi

Thanks for the suggestion mistidahi. We eat siru dhanyam once in a while. Nowadays, we have started using them in idli batter(ragi) and for preparing adai (kambu/pearl millet).

On the exercise front, i have started doing Suryanamaskara and play badminton, table tennis, play with kids, etc

mistidahi profile image
mistidahi in reply to barani19

Also include microgreens, I include fenugreek microgreens daily in chappati. Other microgreens in salads. The emmer wheat is samba wheat right. Where do buy it? I buy grains from organic store which is not very fresh. Do you buy directly from farmer. If you have any contacts pls share

barani19 profile image
barani19Administrator in reply to mistidahi

mistidahi,

I have started using fenugreek greens with my chapati these days. I use to add dried fenugreek leaves some months ago. Yes. you are right. Emmer wheat is called Samba Godumai in Tamil. I buy it online. Will share the details in chat.

Hidden , I took the same carbs as before. I took Fasting Serum Insulin test along with HbA1C this time. It has reduced from 10 to 9.4 mu-IU/mL. So, my body did not produce more insulin as well.

Dear Barani

Please Keep it up...keep doing what you are doing... and keep eating what you are eating....i know you are taking a lot of Carbs ... yes - many people are able to reverse DM even with a High Carb diet.... as long as it is Whole Grain / legume/ vegetables/ fruits/ dry fruits like dates, palm sugar, honey ....Emer wheat... Why not Mappialli Samba ( Bridegroom red rice- Tamilnadu ) ??? Mappialli Samba would exactly work like Emmer wheat.

You need not have to go extremities and resort to any fad diet which are not scientifically proven over long term......

In fact newer research indicates that whole Plant food though rich in Carbs & Protein have a lot of fiber both Soluble & Insoluble , Micronutrients , Vitamins , Minerals, Anti- oxidants , phyto-nutrients, which help in improving insulin sensitivity and reversing insulin resistance .... Preventing CV risk and diabetic complications .

namaha ,

Thanks for your guidance and help as well.

I did try Mapillai Samba rice. It does not boil well as you may need to soak this rice for almost 24 hours before you boil it in a pressure cooker. Another important thing is that it does not go well with traditional south Indian meal like Sambar, Rasam, etc. Hand pounded organic Ponni rice suits me better. I have started having this rice once or twice in a week. I found PPBS of identical quantity of this rice perform better than emmer wheat. My PPBS with this rice(around 80g-100g) was 88 mg/dL whereas with emmer wheat my PPBS was around 100-110 mg/dL. Ponni rice is economical as well (1 kg costs around Rs. 70-75) whereas Mappillai Samba costs around Rs.200-250 per kg.

Also, my father-in-law who is a T2D for more than 15 years had hand-pounded Sona Masoori[similar to Ponni, available in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu] rice along with traditional south Indian meal and found his PPBS to be around 150 mg/dL without his usual Metmorfin tablet. He was delighted to see these results.

Thanks Barani !

You are giving me a lot of information which I am very much familiar with...🙂

Ponni, Sonamsuri Rice I love a lot....have taken during engineering college days in Tamilnadu....

But now we all are Re-discovering those traditional Rice in different forms .....Organic / Brown/Red / Hand pounded ...etc

By the way , you seem to have tried many things....🙂

Can you please get me the link to buy on line- hand pounded variety of Organic Ponni / Sona masuri Rice ..?

Also source of your palm sugar ....?

Regarding Mappialli Samba, which I got from Amazon - I liked though the cost is high @Rs300/ kg...for the organic variety ...

I did not find an issue in cooking..

I soaked overnight and next morning I pressure cooked- food was ready within 30 mnts.....

namaha ,

Good to know that you are familiar with the varieties of the rice I spoke about.

I have shared information about palm sugar and the link of buying Organic ponni rice online in chat.

Good to hear that you are able to use Mappillai Samba rice.

Also, I buy specific brand of dates from Kashmir which are diffrent from the commercial sugar coated dates. The same is applicable for honey as well. I buy it from a local online store who source it from Nilgiris.

pls cook rice in earthen vessels to get the best anti inflammatory benefit..Try karuppu kavani rice too.

barani19 profile image
barani19Administrator in reply to soni1

Thanks for your suggestion and video soni1 . Karuppu Kavuni is very similar to mappillai samba and you need to soak in water for some hours before cooking. We have bought authentic earthen vessels from Wayanad, Kerala as we found some of the earthen vessels are actually made in concrete and painted as red. Thanks for your suggestion on this one as well.

All,

Rice cooking, different rice in different production!!!

In Tamil population , lunch time always three or four helping of cooked rice.

First, rice take with raw or cooked greens.

Second helping taken with curry in one for other.

Third with rasam or sooty.

In my younger days the above three were practiced. My uncle used to say eat rice quickly like a mason covering a wall with cement!!!!!,

Fourth in some time rice taken with yogurt.

Over the years it has changed as people eat less rice. My travels in India, I learned a lot of local food habit. When I ask for small portion of rice and lot of curries and ask for more curry, I ended up ordering a second meal.

In UK, we cook white basmati rice in rice cooker, one rice cooker cup cooked in 2 cups of tap water, enough for two people for evening meal. The last 50 years we have been doing this way and only eat twice a week rice meal, a lot of veg, fish or chicken or lamb curry.

Good luck all, enjoy one life. say no to additional rice and any form of sugar,

There is a fifth serving - Rice Sambar 😀

We get Sambar rice in the temples in UK.

Awesome to hear that sandybrown . I feel heavy eating sambar rice.

barani19 profile image
barani19Administrator in reply to namaha

namaha ,

The below are the usual order in south Indian servings [TN style].

The entire course starts with Paayasam, a sweet.

1) Rice with Dal [ can be classified as half-course]

2) Rice with Sambar along with vegetables[curry with coconut], koottu [with dal and other spices]

3) Rice with Vattha Kozhambu [ curry & with papad]

4) Rice with Rasam [ with urad papad]

5) Rice with buttermilk or curd with pickle

Rice cooked and uncooked measurement. ??

WE only use rice cooker measurement cup, one cup of basmati rice, uncooked rice and two cups of cold water makes enough rice for two people in a small rice cooker.

I can measure this next time but how important is this? We have been doing this method for many years.

I have been looking at other grain rice, I need to go to a Sri Lankan shop to but, Thani rice, Samba rice and Kurukan rice. I can also but flower to make ediappam and puddo.

soni1 profile image

what is your pp value with that quantity of rice?

In UK, under the control of NHS, I test HbA1C every 6 months. I am controlling my HbA1C number and cholesterol number by regular exercise and food and drinks in take control. At my age I am happy with twice a year HbA1c check, cholesterol check, once a year eye and foot check. Only time will tell. My strong belief is all blood numbers increase as we age.

Take care.
