United Nations world health day on 7 th April. A report by WHO on diabetes scenario.

As per news published in times of India on 7 th April,2016 ,number of adults with diabetes has quadrupled worldwide in under four decades to422 millions.

In one of the largest studies to date of diabetes trends, researchers said aging populations and rising levels of obesity across the world mean diabetes is becoming " a defining issue for public health ". Type2 diabetes is a long term condition characterised by insulin resistance. Obesity is the most important risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

It found that between 1980 and 2014 diabetes has become more common among men than women, and rates of diabetes rose significantly in many low and middle income countries,including China,India,Indonesia,Pakistan,Egypt and Mexico.

The study found that north Western Europe has the lowest rates of diabetes,with age adjusted prevalence lower than 4% in women and5-6% among men in Switzerland,Austria,Denmark,Belgium and Netherlands.

The largest increases in diabetes rates were in Pacific nation islands,followed by Middle East and Africa. The data also showed that half of the adults with diabetes lived in five countries China,India USA,Brazil and Indonesia.

Reasons you have mentioned are fully valid as regards to the spread of diabetes as also few major diseases. I may also add that paradigm change in our  dietary  habits and sedentary and unhealthful life style play a major role in continuation and spread of diabetes.
