Early signs of type 2 diabetes can be identified more than 20 years before diagnosis, according to new research presented at this year's European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting in Berlin, Germany (1-5 October).

The Japanese study tracked over 27,000 non-diabetic adults (average age 49 years) between 2005 and 2016 and found that increased fasting glucose, higher body mass index (BMI) and impaired insulin sensitivity were detectable up to 10 years before the diagnosis of diabetes as well as prediabetes.

Interesting study. This is a wake up call for non-diabetics. Unfortunately, they don't seem to consider diabetes as their concerns. Being diabetic without knowing is severely harmful.

In facts many of the doctors ( in India ),do not like that diabetic should control his/ her diabetes by lifestyle changes... they would love patients whose BS is uncontrolled.. leave giving forwarning of prediabtic stage..

What a sad truth 😭. Believe me this happens else where. This day somehow it is necessary to do our own research of health concerns before consulting a doctor. At least we can pose useful and relevant questions especially the choices of treatment. Some doctors don't bother ask patients about their lifestyles or diet as they focus on prescribing medication.

This is real problem here..as diabetic is not correctly advised about his condition.. many a times he is frightened, he is made to buy and take many unnecessary medicines,(like statins) and worsen the condition.. only people’s movement and controlling BS through lifestyle changes would give great relief.. In Maharashtra( India) one such Doctor ( Dr Jagannath Dixit) is crusader for control of weight and BS through Intermittent fasting and many diabetics are getting benefitted. His utube videos are worth watching..

a similar and thorough campaign started with a INSULIN control diet regime is started in in AP and laks of people get revered their Type-2 Diabetes to their just before Diabetes stage of health. it means henceforth that stage, if one controls similar (not same) diet (as that of in Diabetes stage) but more CONTROLLED-liberty way, still does not show-up any Complications. Positive side-effects are (controlled BP, control of Thyroid problems healthy Heart and associated benefits) .

Please note the above is for TYPE-2 Diabetes only.

It is a professional interest for the doctors and getting a diabetic or any other patient is like getting a gold mine in to possession for them . It is really a sad state of affairs to day .

Very true. Subject high risk non-diabetic people to kraft test and plot the results on a graph. Possibility of future diabetes development can be predicted quite accurately. The advantage of such practice is that the people can be forewarned and inspired to change diet and lifestyle to stop development of diabetes.

Likewise even possibility of chd also can be predicted except if an atheroma dislodges to give acute mi and catastrophic death. This accident can't be predicted.

Prediction of health issues is an useful measure but prevention to all health concerns is an important thing everyone should apply to our daily lives especially those preventable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia or some cardiovascular diseases.

I think people would be eager to know if they will have diabetes or and chd in future. Also very important that one can prevent or delay the progression these diseases by diet and lifestyle modifications. I think such tests are very useful.

You are exactly right. People need to be more informed and much more proactive in our own health.

Frankly i did not read the link you gave.

Leaving aside the scientific study for scientists, but for a common educated man (and this educated man educate non-educated person) the very simple and straight-forward indication is that "DETECTION OF FATTY LIVER" would be "good-enough" to consider future complications of Diabetes and associated issues (PERIOD).

If one takes a very clear steps to recover from that FATTY LIVER to normal and keep tracking and maintain healthy liver then NO FUTURE complications related to diabetes (double-Period) !!!!

In many corporate organisations executive check up are provided free of cost. Such check up should mendatorily include tests for any chance of diabetes in future. Thats one solution to keep the number of diabetics in control because once a person becomes a diabetic he has to live with it lifelong

But, now we think awareness increased, but you know those who had no health issues, they don't bother to hear unless they are really affected or someone cautioned. Most Doctors doesn't say precautionary things, so the profession flourish.

What tests detect fatty liver? Let us know if you have done a similar test.

kkmworldno1 profile image
kkmworldno1 in reply tobarani19

A simple Ultrasound scan in Liver and Pancreas region (lower right side of stomach). The report should show if the liver is normal, or enlarged or fatty and such kind of terminology.

Also, a possible caution or alert could be if at anytime anyone had Jaundice, then they should also be more vigilant on liver testing more often than normal.

Had i know this before (say 12 years before) i could have taken care that time itself. BUT no worries, even now, at least got rid of diabetic medicines and now OK with diet maintenance (mostly LCHF) but slowly i will further control more effectively without compromising my taste buds :))))))

With out going in to tests if one becomes over weight , one should take all the precautions . Any one should not weigh more than that of one's weight at the age of 25 .The food intake should be half of that which one takes at that age as one crosses that age ..
