So proud of myself on W1/R3 and first outdoors but on penultimate run achilles felt really sore so i didn't do the last run just kept walking briskly to end of session. Was this the right thing to do or should i have run through the pain? Total newbie to running!!

I know that sometimes it's easy to find an excuse when the running bits are difficult but in this case, I think you did the right thing. It really is annoying when something stops you doing it.

I'm no expert though so hopefully others will be on to advise you.

Hmmmm, difficult one this. I've run through all my twinges (had one that lasted 4 weeks!) but they were in my legs, so I figures that they were muscles, tendons, ligaments adjusting and they didn't really hurt when I ran only the rest of the time.

I would say, though, that if it's your Achilles and it hurts when you run, then I wouldn't run if it hurts WHILE you're running.

Are you trainers correct for you?

Oh, and you have every right to be proud of yourself, well done for completing the first week. Don't let discomfort put you off but at the same time listen to your body - only you will be able to tell if it is an adjusting twinge or something that feels more serious.

I ignored knee pain end October/beginning November and it put me right out of action - I hope to start the programme again within the next week or so. BE VERY CAREFUL. Do a good warm up, stretch after your run, if it's more than a minor niggle don't run and if it still hurts a couple of days later get it checked. Better safe than sorry. I was sorry. (which I realize makes me a complete bore about it... :-D !)

Running outside is a bit more challenging for the feet, maybe it was that. Good suggestion of Viv's about your shoes.

Good luck and happy running! :-)

Thanks all,

I think it may be the fact that I have my new running shoes on and is therefore an adjustment pain! , I went to excellent shop recommended by a runner friend and they looked at my feet and me jogging very carefully , the trainers are very padded and therefore different from trainers i had used before (they look hideous!!!) I will do lots of stretches and take it slow
