Do I run?

Hi peeps

I did my first run on Sunday morning and other than tech issues, it was great and I was really chuffed with myself.

Anyway I was on feet all day Sunday pottering round etc and I've developed through Sunday and today shin pain, I'm presuming shin splints. I'm 3 stone over weight (I'm doing something about it, and although only just started running I'm quite active, walking and swimming and 2 little kids!) Question is do I do my second run in the morning?

I'm only in normal trainers, I want to prove to myself my body is capable before re mortgaging the house for good trainers etc and I took it slow, it was bearly jogging!!!

Do I just take some pain killers stretch and warm up a little more to see if the pain eases or do I need to stop and wait for them to heal? Then go through it all again when I start back?

It's worse if I rest then get up, so keeping moving is better in general

Help please

Shin splints are caused primarily by impact, so slowing down helps, as do all the other things mentioned in the guide to the plan healthunlocked.com/couchto5... to minimise impact..........good shoes being one of the most critical.

Personally, I don't subscribe to taking painkillers to mask such pains when running, but many do.

Stretching after every run and doing knee and leg strengthening, as linked to in the guide can also make a significant difference.

This article about shinsplints may help runnersworld.com/shin-splints/ but if you have this after only one run, then it may be something other than shinsplints.

I found doing the NHS Strength and Flex podcasts on my rest days greatly reduced my aches and pains (and my excuses for not going out !) Worth checking out - they’re free and they start very gently.

Do a run anyway but do a bit less.
