Running through the pain

So having had 60th birthday health check and been told I failed on the amount of exercise I do I decided to take up the challenge of couch to 5k. It is probably over 40 Years since I ran anywhere. However I completed Week 5 Run 1 today and actually could still talk at the end. Find the first run of each session a challenge getting enough air in my lungs but then it does get easier. Only problem I have is that I have a pain in one ankle which I think may be my Achilles' tendon but ibuprofen gel helping. Determined to do my 1st Park Run At end of August so have to keep going and family so proud of me can't give up.

Brilliant! I started at the tender age of 59 and finished the programme a few weeks back. You've done really well to get this far, and good luck with the remaining weeks 👍👏

Very well done..but if the pain is bad enough to need painkiller or gel, then maybe ease back a tad.. slow right down...and if the pain persists then just rest up a little :)

Well done!

I also find my breathing is a bit laboured during the first run but then settles down. I wonder why that is?

You’re an inspiration to all those 60 year old couch potatoes 🙂

Good luck for doing your park run.

Well done you keep up the good work happy running😊

Congratulations! I took up running at 64, and it is great, one of the best things I have ever done. I now run up to 3 times a week distance usually about 6k but I can easily do 10k. To be honest I don’t get any pain running, I get more from being inactive and sitting on my backside! My breathing like you was bad when I started doing Couch to 5k but it has now completely settled down and I don’t get out of breath if I run at my comfortable pace which is fairly slow. Keep going, you will easily make it.

Well done you. I’m 63 and started in April after never having run - ever - and no exercise other than family life since the early 70s! It’s an amazing programme and I managed my first park run this month. The first 5 minutes are the worst for me but this granny runs too! Power to the grannies!!

Oh and my park run doesn’t have many in my age group. I came second in my age group. Was delighted with that but of 3 it turns out!! 😆 Age is an advantage for once.

So today got up very early as one of my two lovely Newfadors had an upset stomach. Big dog, big mess! So although it was raining decided to do Week 5 Run 3, only a summer shower I told the dogs as they got back in their beds and I left. This run was really worrying me as first time ever in my life I would jog for 20 minutes. Glad to report I did it despite the heavy rain and having to run through puddles with wet feet. Felt like a real jogger as my legs were covered in mud by the end. Arrived home feeling very proud to discover dog had now been very sick, you guessed it, big dog, big mess. Never mind think they are very proud of me, know my very supportive partner is - although that may have been because I cleared up all the mess rather than waking him! Thank you to everyone for encouraging me, can't believe how much it does help knowing others are wishing me well on this journey.
