The Consolation of Consolidation - Week 9 Run 4

After the jubilation of Sunday's graduation run and the sheer pleasure of graduating simultaneously with   MintT and   sheps , it's back to the runs you choose to do and not those you feel compelled to do...

Except - there is a compelling event today because both MintT and sheps said they were consolidating today. MintT has done hers and written it up, hence that's one out of the three of us. Gauntlet firmly laid down, so I'm picking it up.

There's many pieces of advice out there, including the new "beyond' runs, but I thought I'd just re-do the thirty minutes run. Was supposed to be doing it first thing, but weather was shocking, so decided to do shopping instead - total disaster as we tried out a new place.

Lost my shopping bags - someone nicked my trolley... Couldn't work the self service check out as it wouldn't take cash, asked if anyone had handed in the shopping bags - yes I'd actually stolen someone else's empty trolley and they were surprised to find my Daunt's Bookshop bag in theirs. I'd already bought two disposable corn bags, and then I couldn't leave the supermarket as there was a receipt reader which wouldn't read my receipt to let me out. Truthfully Fano market is much easier.

Still raining, went to a new dog park for Fibi Fardashian and Bobster the Monster, except like the new shopping venue, it promised much and delivered little. FF and BTM are ex racing greyhounds with a high prey drive and non existent recall. Hence we only ever keep them on the leash or in enclosed spaces, when there are no small dogs. We thought this park was bigger, fenced in and empty. Two out of three wasn't bad but it was teeny tiny and the big loop took us all of 10 minutes, and we found ourselves walking the dogs on a derelict industrial estate. Interesting in a post apocalyptic modern photography sense, but little stimulation for us or the dogs.

The run couldn't be worse... Waited until after lunch for the weather to brighten - aiming for light grey and drizzle rather than dark grey and peeing down. Weather improved and off I went. Normally I adopt snail minus 1 as my pace, but today I was on WARP speed - Wholemeal, Avocado, Rocket and Prawn sandwich, which did slow me down even more than usual, as maybe I should have had lunch one hour after running and not one hour prior.

Argos' loop done, left onto Laundry Lane couldn't face the big incline, so turned back around and headed towards the village, all the while listening to Jo Whiley's programme on BBC Sounds, thought it might be different to her coaching style. She's still cool although I found it hard to time my run to some of the music as the tempo was very variable. It was a bit ploddy to be frank and as I approached the Village Via (14% gradient) I wimped out and ran back along Laundry Lane.

I remembered MintT's phrase we get to run, so pulled up my big girl knickers and decided come hell or high water I would run/stagger up the Village Via slope. It was gruesome but I did and Map My Run Mechanical Voice Lady told me I'd managed to run for 33 minutes, so that's an improvement on timing , but not pace so I'm thinking next time out I may do two intervals maybe of 16 minutes each, so I'm not over-stretching.

I was 'Daunted' in the supermarket when I thought I'd been the victim of a Daunt bag-napping, but wasn't daunted by the thought of joining my run buddy   MintT today.

Consoled by a consolidation run, on a grey day.

Hopefully next time out I get some blue sky

Well done, lady what an amazing effort and achievement on both counts.

You did make me giggle with your shopping exploits, so relatable. Friday is my next run. You? ♥️

Friday is the plan (before lunch of course) - can’t do Thursday as we are on the rosemary planting marathon part 2. Which in truth is utterly knackering… but they’re such good friends they and we want their garden to be pretty so it’s perfect for their daughter’s wedding.

The supermarket was recommended by said rosemary planting friends- I think I needed a shopping induction session, before trying to shop. Much much easier in the market… 👍🏃‍♀️‍➡️😘

I found after graduation I left beyond for a few weeks to allow my body to get more used to 30 minute runs, but beyond has some good advice on having a 'big' run and then a shorter 20 minute run after the rest day/days which is what I did last night, after the 5k my thigh muscles really ached, not as bad yesterday, still ached after the shorter run, but nothing today, so it seems to have helped there!

Good advice that seems I’m ok on the runs afterwards but not speeding along at all …

oh gosh, this popped into my inbox. I hope all is well. I had been running regularly up until last September. Unfortunately while training to hike Brn Nevis my feet decided that 3 10k runs a week plus an extra two 15k yps with a 7k back pack and new hiking shoes were just too much and developed a cut plantar fasciitis. I haven’t been able to run since . Doing daily physio and while one foot is better the other refuses to improve so I’m still on the injury couch

But doing lots of physical volunteering tasks with GoodGym which is keeping me active.

Oh… and eldest daughter got married in Puglia last summer so that was lots of prep and a three day event .. which was amazing.

Hope all is well with you. X x x

Oh wow - we had a whole load of life crap to deal with most of it very unpleasant but we are out the other side now. I apologised to you in my coming back post - am just on the route back to 10km because that was always my favourite run length. But more wrinkles and no exercise has left me umpteen times slower but back on it thank goodness. Wow your running and hiking sounds truly awesome- sorry you’re on the IC - it sounds like a long haul.

Wedding in Puglia how lovely and a three day one too… this year is our last in Le Marche we are coming home although not entirely sure where that will be.

So lovely to see you ! Hopefully the recalcitrant foot will start to behave

I remember a semi strop with a guy in Aldi for stealing my trolley. He was just lovely and held up some items from the trolley and said, "what - this shopping?" I'd been loading his trolley with my shopping and my trolley was way back in store. It was a couple of years after Covid and I was still a bit fuzzy, so I explained, apologised and we sorted out my kidnapping quite amicably!

Well done on the run. These post-graduation runs are not to be glossed over; everyone finds their own way to move forward - and you seem to have a Euro-wide tribe!

I think I’d forgotten I’d taken in the bags and put them in my trolley then I stole someone else’s empty trolley. Oh the shame of being forgetful - I hate grocery shopping in supermarkets I’m always in a denial fog! You had Covid fog as an excuse me not so much! The run was just not fun but it’s the way it goes - some are good and others not. But eventually I know the allure will be back consistently.. as you get better it gets easier and more fun!

Some runs & gym trips are because they're good for me. Many make me feel better afterwards. And sometimes I feel simply joyous with the activity.

No matter what, it's never not worth it.
