Hi gang, I've not posted for a while, although I've popped onto other peoples' posts.
I made it back to week 7 and feeling pretty good when I twisted my ankle yet again. I stopped running to allow it to heal but it still felt unreliable so I went to a physio. He referred me to an orthopaedic consultant, and long story short, I'm having my ankle operated on in November.
Turns out I've got long term damage to a ligament and it's not supporting my heel as it should. So I'll be in a cast for several weeks, then in a boot. Then physio.
It's going to be a very quiet christmas, but the consultant asked me what outcome I wanted and when I said, to get back running, he said the operation is the way to go. So hopefully it will all be worth it.
Eek.

🍏 always worth getting a medical opinion! Thanks for highlighting this!!!
So sad and sorry you are going to be out of action but pleased it can be sorted. Do keep popping in and out & we look forward to hearing about your journey to recovery! ❤️🩹
Oh nooo, at least you know now what it is and what needs to be done to get back proper comfortable mobility and running, sending healing vibes and wishing you a speedy recovery xx
Thanks Sue, I've been catching up on your progress too and it's so nice to see you getting back outside. Be a while before I'm out there and it's quite scary, but it feels like a positive thing to do.
You're right Blue, he did explain that there will be a point where I will definitely wish I'd never bothered, but then it will get better and be worth it!
It is going be hard and it may feel like for ever...but you know where you are and you know it is going to sort... !
I have been out for twelve weeks following a flag up over a knee issue... and it did feel like an absolute age, but gosh .when you get out again! Wow.
PLUS... we shall expect to see you across at the S and F Forum, where there are so many chair based and one leg exercises that you will not have time to think!
Best of luck with the operation. Can I ask a a couple of questions as I may be heading down that route with my ankle. How long did it take from the doctor’s initial referral to seeing the consultant and how long from there to getting the operation booked? Is it an arthroscopy or open operation? Sorry turned into more than just a couple. 😂
Sorry Brian, if I'd gone through NHS I would still be waiting. They just kept recommending exercises through the physio at the GP practice. (They offered a referral but said it would take months) I'm in the fortunate position of having Bupa insurance for certain circumstances so it all happened pretty quickly.
Yeah, fair enough. I don’t blame you. I don’t have insurance so it’s either wait or fork out. I’ve already paid for one private consultation and an mri . I have a second consultation in December with the NHS specialist but after that I’ll need to make a decision. Pay or wait. Thing is either way, next season will be a non starter for me and possibly the one after that once I’m back into training and at international level again (fingers crossed) 🤔 I’ll know more after December consultation.
Let us know how the consultation goes, I suppose they will be able to give you an idea of the wait times. It's so frustrating isn't it! It's four years since I broke my ankle, and I've been trying to get back running ever since, but my flipping ankle always let me down. On the plus side, paying for your MRI saves months of waiting.
A friend of mine had an mri on the NHS and had to wait a YEAR for the follow-up appointment to discuss the results.
Budge up drl, I could be sat next to you there for a while. I'd better bring a couple of cushions.I've just looked to see what happened to you, isn't it strange what our bodies can do when the adrenaline is flowing!
I'm sure it will be worth it, my husband has had ankle surgery to correct an overturning foot, and the situation is so much better as a result. So stick with the enforced rest, and I'm sure it will be worthwhile in the end!
