QUESTION of the WEEK?...........................??????? Where do YOU keep YOURS?

Just Kidding!

My gear would NOT fit in this wonderful little bag...this was a gift from my amazing friend Bluebirdrunner ! This is my travel/race, running bag and although it holds one heck of a lot...it would not hold all!

SO!

Hello everyone and welcome to Question of the Week...! Where do your keep YOURS?

Me?

I keep, in reality, my running outfits, in two drawers... on a set of clothes hooks and on a small shoe trolley! Race hydration vest... in my studio.

But, when I began running C25K, way back in 2015...I did not need much space at all. I had. One pair of running shoes...black... One pair of leggings... black..... one t shirt.... black... and one jacket for cooler days... Grey ! Grey Snail!

Now nearly ten years on.... Wowsers... ! Grey ? Not on your nelly!

I have multicoloured, leggings, crops, full length, shorts and long and short sleeved t-shirts too. Lightweight jackets two, gilet one, two caps and a thermal bob!

I am Rainbow Snail Floss !

I bought my first coloured outfit, after I graduated, I still have those leggings and the top...the shoes gave their all and they are planters for small plants in my garden! The leggings are so thinly worn, at the top now, that I fear for decency and always wear a longer top, just in case:)

But, I hasten to add... in case you think I am just a mad, spend anything, shopper, they are all worn regularly and all of them, either gifts or bought at sale prices! Sale Queen, my daughter calls me.

There are always bargains to be had; end of season sales, charity shops and odd colour ranges, and I have latterly, got some real bargains.

Because, also, over the past years since graduation, gained and lost weight , but, I have had lost a fair bit of weight over the last year following Mr OF's heart attack... and I have donated some stuff that I know I shall never wear again, to a recycle running gear charity.

Okay... YOUR turn now... and I shall be intrigued by the answers...I am thinking we shall, many of us have a designated place or places; but maybe not. Maybe you have just one favourite set of gear, maybe you keep it with other clothes, maybe you have a box or a cupboard.. or bag?

We can hardly wait to see your replies...so come on, share... where DO you keep yours?

What an interesting question Oldfloss ! I don't have a lot of clothes storage so the 'seasonal' running kit goes in a drawer and the out of season is in a bag in the space under my (ottoman) bed. Right now it's got warm leggings, long sleeved top, running jumper and windproof jacket.

I like to keep things minimal but thanks to my recent trip where ticks were an issue I now have 3 summer running bottoms - long and capri length leggings plus shorts. I only wear the shorts now I'm home so might put the others with the winter clothes.

Thanks to losing my running gear, misplacing actually, I now have a new running vest, much nicer than my old one but I'm not chucking that out.

The shoes live by the door with the socks tucked into them. My belt is left wherever I take it off and the water bottle is usually lying around somewhere.

Spare trainers live in a cupboard in anticipation of the next time I leave my good ones somewhere.

Not the world's most organised system but it works for me 😁

Hello! This is interesting! I have a bottomless underbed storage, too, that holds oodles of things for out of season...

Ouch...ticks! Eeek! my worst nightmare and a good reason for plenty of the right gear! I did smile when you found the lost vest... after your had bought a new one:)

You have your places for your things... and they work for you... unfortunately, I have a lovely dinosaur husband, whose head is so far from his feet, that I dare not leave shoes anywhere int rip distance:)

If you know where the things are,, then that is all that matters...and i do feel that I am a lot more organised now, than i ever was years ago!

Thanks for sharing! x

I absolutely hate ticks. They seem to like Mr Y and he had to have treatment for Lyme's after we found a really big one on him. Horrible things. I bought him some long running trousers to make sure the little b***ers didn't get him on our last trip and thankfully they worked!

Even at my messiest, when the kids were small and there was no time for tidying, I always kept the stairs clear of clutter. Not just Mr OF needs to avoid tripping and falling. We didn't have any banisters so it was really important to go for pre emptive measures!

Like you say, as long as I know where stuff is I'm ok 😂

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toYesletsgo

I hate any biting things and like Mr Y... they absolutely love me:) A lot !

healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

That one turned into cellulitis!

Irishprincess did a post on Horseflies, she had been bitten too and it started a post about what to wear to keep them away; I think many of us were running around looking like deckchairs, after that.... I still do:)

I am like you with stairs, always clear... and as we have got older, Mr OF and I are more careful:)

We do what works for us... and that is just as it should be.

Yesletsgo profile image
YesletsgoAdministratorGraduate in reply toOldfloss

Ticks, horseflies, wasps, mozzies, false widows - the list goes on!

Eeeww!!

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessGraduate in reply toOldfloss

Gosh, I remember that. It bit me on my bum as I was in the garden! And through my shorts! Cheeky so-and-so 😮 But I do remember they are attracted to black fabric, so it’s good news for us Floss 🤣

They are in full flow here atm. A neighbour has been bitten three times already so I am on high alert 🙀

Did I tell you about my new way of applying insect repellant? On holiday last year when I’d already been bitten by mozzies, an Italian pharmacist told me to apply insect repellant only on the pulse points, not all over. I have not been bitten by anything since 🤞

🍏🤣 Morning Oldfloss I am so the opposite …. Black everything with a touch of pink here and there and reflective strips! Except in winter I don a beautiful multicoloured pure wool slouchy over my running cap. It was made for me by a very dear friend to brighten up those cold frosty 🥶 days. All my running gear is kept neatly in a pullout drawer. As I am usually an early morning runner it’s all laid out ready to go the night before. I am a lavender lady 🤣🤣and have plenty of essential oil sachets nestled in between the freshly laundered gear. My trainers take pride of place on the shoe rack and are always and only used for running. Now to let you all into a secret 🤫 I am only this disciplined and organised when it comes to running. The rest of my life is chaotic! 🙈

Yesletsgo profile image
YesletsgoAdministratorGraduate in reply toAnnieapple

I love the comment about black everything :) and also the idea of lots of lavender/oils, sounds so lovely!

I really tried to buy a bright coloured running vest when my old (black/grey) one was hiding. The shop only had black though, and I really couldn't be bothered going anywhere else to look (minimum 30-40 minute drive). I really like it though.

Annieapple profile image
AnnieappleAdministratorGraduate in reply toYesletsgo

🍏🤣I am so not a shopper or bargain hunter unlike the rest of my family! My first running gear was purchased at Sports Direct with a very helpful assistant who gave me excellent advice.. I now buy the same things online when I need them.. including my Asics .. once bought a beautiful blue pair but they looked scruffy much sooner than the black ones 🤣

Yesletsgo profile image
YesletsgoAdministratorGraduate in reply toAnnieapple

Yep, where would I be without Sports Direct? My original running shoes were bought there too and served me well. I've had pale blue, pale green and bright orange shoes as well as the black ones. The colours are lovely but like you say they do get very tired looking.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toAnnieapple

I do enjoy a bargain hunt...but dislike shops... I do find, more online offers:)

Oldfloss profile image

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toAnnieapple

Hello... small person has not long gone home and I have time to reply! Now your outfits sound so, stylish and sassy... I would look like a jumble sale , next to you... I LOVE black and pink though!

A drawer storer like me, but with lavender sachets... I do like the sound of that too! Shoes too, on a rack.... mine are on a little rack in my back kitchen porch,,, with my walking trainers...!

You sound very organised and I find it difficult to believe that itis only running related... really?

Thank you so much for sharing... x

Confession!

I’m a messy slob…so mainly in a corner of my bedroom! When I was running regularly the main kit lived on the landing bannisters. Ummm…little used gear in a drawer…

3 pairs of trainers…running and recent ex runners for serious walking in bathroom, and ex ex runners in bedroom for general use.

Oh and old style ear buds live in car, and blue tooth buds in house, for when I run from home.

What can I say !? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yesletsgo profile image
YesletsgoAdministratorGraduate in reply toLottieMW

I find it hard to throw old shoes away. Currently have two old pairs that I shouldn't run in any more. The ASICS really show their age because they are pale and the toe is wearing through but I feel that I paid so much for them that it's wrong to chuck 'em out. My first Brooks are black so really useful when I'm say going to watch a band or walking, they are still so comfortable.

I threw out the pair I did C25K in because the physio told me they were the cause of a nasty peroneal tendon injury. My sentimentality only goes so far!

I also have a cheap pair of ASICS which are fine for when I'm on holiday and probably not running a lot. I don't mind wearing them for walking (usually only wear running shoes for running in) plus they are light, both in colour and weight so really nice when it's too hot for the black Brooks.

(Like you, by nature I'm a slob but I'm now semi retired and have time on my hands plus my husband is very tidy so I kinda like to keep him happy. The only things I can get away with are the water bottle and belt lol)

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toYesletsgo

I cannot believe that you are a slob at all ? How does that work on a boat, where everything really does need to be ship shape? x

Yesletsgo profile image
YesletsgoAdministratorGraduate in reply toOldfloss

The boat is a whole other level of minimalism Oldfloss . It's quite a stripped back racy model, hardly any clothes storage. My stuff lives in a series of packing cubes. The running gear cube also contains my knee and ankle supports - I figure if I need them while I'm away I don't want to be negotiating a language barrier to say 'my knee hurts'. If I'm at home I know how to buy new ones :)

Now I've got a new running vest I'll be able to leave the old one on the boat full time along with the shorts as I won't need them over the winter. Less stuff to carry.

(Oh and as for organisational skills underway - just put anything that moves in a place where if the boat heels it can't fall on you. The doors on the galley cupboards close very firmly and my husband's guitar is put carefully on our bed wrapped in the duvet so it stays safe, along with my laptop 😂)

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toLottieMW

Okay... I have just stopped giggling... a messy slob ? Never! Are you sure?

Well, I say, of it works for you, then that is just as it should be, but I do have to have my gear a little more organised and as I said to Yesletsgo ...my husband would really struggle with things around and about... he is not great, balance-wise and his brain is a long way from his feet! :)

Thank you so much for sharing and being so honest too... Your runs, your pace... your gear in your place:) x

Good morning Floss, interesting to know where you keep your running clothes, what I have most are running T 👕 shirts, I also have 3 pairs of running shoes, I still have those blue running shoes I wore at my first parkrun, they have lasted a while but I don't wear them every time I run, I also have a pair trail shoes and I bought another pair of running shoes for my birthday in May.I keep my running shoes and T shirts separately in another part of my wardrobe, the T shirts in another drawer from my non running T Shirts, I have a parkrun T shirt, a 25/50 and 100 milestone T shirt as well as two London Vitality 10,000 T shirts from a few years ago.

I could have two more running T Shirts in September and October when I run two more 10K events, a local 10K near to where I live in September, the October 10K is the 10K version of The Great Scottish Run.

Two more items for your t shirts,,, time to make more room... You may need to get a bigger wardrobe at the rate you are going...

I started out with a cheap pair of trainers, an old fleece and a random pair of leggings. Now four and a half years later I had 3 pairs of shoes with their own shelf in the shoe rack, road, trail and for winter gortex lined Upstairs my 4 pairs of leggings, 1 pair of shorts, and a skort share their drawer with numerous tops and vests and a gilet.

During the summer I alternate between shorts and skort paired with vests, winter is nearly always the same leggings and warm tops.

I could probably half what I've got on the drawer but where you start . . .

Great post Oldfloss and that Bluebirdrunner is a proper diamond 💎

I keep my vests and shorts in one drawer and my socks in another. The shoes are in a cupboard under the stairs. When we go away (we like to do a lot of Parkrun tourism) we pack our running stuff first (I sometimes take a separate holdall for my running gear 😁(Tasha gives me the eye roll 🙃) and we make sure we have all our kit before packing other stuff 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I even wear running t-shirts from races as 'best' 😃 Gels, earphones and bottles all accompany us too. I would never have believed all this when I began almost 6 years ago. Long may it continue 🙌

Oddly, I imagined you as a tidy running-storer?

Tasha would eye roll at me too, then, I do have my Floss bag... and my shoes have their own waterproof drawstring bag too!

I like you wearing your race T shirts as best. I have just started wearing my race ones now, where before they sort of lived in the drawer... , The only one I don't wear outside the house... a Monsal trail HM one that says.. I'm not a PIE, I'm a TART.... that really is a step too far:)

I have 2 pairs of black leggings with side pockets which are kept in a drawer with my running socks, parkrun snood, sun visors and sports bras. 4 vests of various colours including PR purple 25, various charity run T shirts Christmas shirt and 3 other t shirts all on multi- hangers in my winter coat wardrobe (I have 4 wardrobes - winter, summer, ballroom dancing and winter coats. Mr B has 1 🤭😂). Running shoes, 2prs on the shoe rack by the back door. Pink baseball cap with sparkly butterfly also by the door. Good morning   Oldfloss well I’m afraid mine’s a bit boring…. I have one bottom draw in my Narnia wardrobe for all my running gear. So one side is for my running tops, very samey colors …..black ! a little bit of white creeping in there….and two t shirts from London vitality virtual 10,000 one of which is my favourite from 2023.and the other is from 2021 and that one is a bit more colourful 😂😂.The other side of my running gear drawer is designated for my leggings black with grey patches, on the side, and another with red patches on the side .Capris the same all from scimitar and two pairs of running shorts from mountain warehouse.

Now the shorts are a recent addition this year for the summer days to my running journey as I’ve never ran in shorts before and……… I love them ! I also have in my drawer an abundance of buffs ,hats and beanies gloves etc. which live down the middle of my drawer

I did have three pairs of running shoes 2 road and one trail. Now I only have two ….trail and road which live in the utility room. However I shall be adding a new pair of trails for the autumn.

I have an osprey hydration vest with squishy water bottles….which I love ! I know name dropping again sorry! This lives in my wardrobe hanging up.

That’s it ! No it’s not… running jacket hung up in hall cupboard….now that’s it!

😂😂😂😂xx

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toFolkylass

Not boring at all... it sound so organised, all ready to hand and full of running stories too!

Great too, to have new additions on your shorts and a new set of running adventure stories there... I am getting used to the shorts idea... but always err on the side of caution, as trail running and field running, can involve, bitey things and scratchy things! I do tend to wear long leggings then and crops, when the season or harvest time permit!

You have a place for everything and everything in its place... Perfect ! Thank you for sharing your running gear locations with us :) x

we had new fitted wardrobes put in last year and a new chest of drawers. This meant a massive sort out of all of our clothes and we gave lots to the charity shops. I have a dedicated drawer for most of my running gear although there is a little bit of overspill into the spare bedroom for a few bits. I love colour and have only just got into wearing shorts for summer running so have quite a lot of bits and pieces. My running shoes are Hoka and are in the front porch with all the other shoes. Think I’m quite organised but it did help being forced to go through everything last summer.

Started, as you know, with absolutely nothing new (and not even a pair of old trainers on my feet) I have a feeling I bought (tip from this very forum) firm control knickers before I bought anything else!

Now I have a drawer for running kit (and hardly worn, alas, cycling gear) Apart from bras, all bottom half as I wear normal cotton t shirts, long or short sleeved on top and accordingly, they live with all my other t shirts.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toGoogleMe

Runderwear is an essential item! Definitely and buying those pants... yes! Chafing and or support, real issues!

Seems a few of have those running drawer... apart from Oldwoman65 and her very sassy F and M Hamper !

Are your t shirts not specifically designed for running, just cotton. That could be a lot less expensive than all the high power? wicking stuff? We are finding so much out with these replies than just where folk keep their gear.

Thank you for sharing!

GoogleMe profile image
GoogleMeGraduate in reply toOldfloss

I've found I really don't get on with synthetics on top (and a lot of the time I am in cotton leggings or (!) shorts as well) Too cold starting out and then very quickly too hot and wet. Add this to my general 'stealth' practice of dressing for a run in the morning and wearing other clothes on top to peel off at my chosen location. And then there's the sustainability issue (although there can be a lot of lycra in cotton clothing as my compost heap experiments have shown, and some of my synthetic garments include recycled fibres)

The firm control knickers were for uncomfortably wobbly tum and I am pleased to say that with the help of running, there's less noticeable (to me anyway!) wobbling even though my weight has crept up back nearer where I started C25K (over a decade mind you, that's a very slow yo-yo!)

Shoes tend to wander about a bit. Even when I've not been bogtrotting, I am trying to do better on the biosecurity front and wash them so they'll often be drying somewhere or they might be in the car... or in the Summer I'll just run in the Keen active sandals I normally wear because I can't face putting socks on in the heat.

(I think you'll remember me talking about the truly vast quantity of active wear which had to go to the tip or which was donated in my father's final months and after his death)

Great question Oldfloss ….

Well I started with a corner of a drawer…then that expanded into a whole drawer…now I have 3 drawers of running gear, two tiers of the shoe rack are mine & I have jackets galore in the coat cupboard…which is pointless because if I wear a jacket it’s not even on for 5 minutes!!! I’m always shopping for running stuff…and my favourite present is a pair of new running shoes x

If I’m travelling, then packing cubes are awesome for keeping tops, sports bras socks and leggings all together, enough for a full week! they hold a surprising amount of stuff. No more pulling everything out of the case and rummaging around to find what I need. At home there’s 2 sets of shoes in the cupboard: Brookes for outside running and Puma’s for treadmill running and there’s a cubby in the wardrobe dedicated for running and skiing stuff, or, sometimes hanging up to refresh for a second wear (provided everything passes the sniff test following day 🤣)

I absolutely love this question! My kit is in several places around the house. …

The main store is a chest in the bedroom divided into tops, bottoms, sports bras and “one more wear” sections. Plus random bits like swimming costumes/bikinis etc.

In the living room, I’ve got a box with my run diary, hydration vest, water bottles, gels, rarely used things like hat, sports tape, safety pins for race number etc. That’s next to a basket with my foam roller, massage ball, resistance bands, dumbbells and yoga mat. Plus chargers for all the tech.

Next to the door I keep my grab and go stuff-headphones, single keys, sandwich bag for wet weather to protect my phone type things. Trainers are all in a big shoe cabinet but often there’s a pair outside the door “recovering” before they’re allowed in the house!!!

I love kit. When we get fitted wardrobes next year, I’ll be making sure there’s space for all of it!
