Bright colours or serious black?

Week 5 Run 3 was completed with a greatful cheer. My inner ego, Enid, had put more than 5 items of sports gear in the various checkout baskets as a reward.

Don't tell Enid but only one item actually got purchased and I probably won't receive it or wear it until Week 6 Run 3. Maybe that should be the next incentive to motivate us.

Enid dreams of multi-coloured clothes, and I promise I looked at so many, but ended up with a grey and black bra top that will match my black leggings.

Are you all wearing bright colours or serious black?

Oooh that Enid! I tend to wear bright coloured tops but all my leggings are pretty dark although one pair has a fluorescent bottom half bit which is great for running in the dark. Well done on completing that milestone run 😊😊😊.

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Frenc

Thank you. Your clothes sound fabulous, Frenc. I know I should let my inner Enid just go for it with the bright colours.

Ha ha this is fab! I’m a black wearer but then I have the brightest trainers (almost glow in the dark) 🤣

Oooh I like the compromise. Thank you, Dendev75.

Well, something happened to me when I started running. I began in a pair of Decathlon grey leggings and black top but slowly became someone I didn't recognise, with an entire wardrobe of brightly coloured and patterned garments to suit every type of weather! I'm not sure how or when exactly it happened as I usually hate drawing any attention to myself 😂

NilsamGraduate in reply to Liono

It's great, isn't it? It must be something about running. I love the idea that it gradual draws out another side to you. Happy running, Liono.

It must be the increased confidence that running brings! Love your post 😃 Happy running to you too!

Black. All black except for Bandannas :) Red, Blue, Green, White bandannas - whatever comes out of the drawer first lol - but apart from that, except for runs where a certain logo or whatever is showing respect, ALL black :)

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Irish-John

Ooh a bandanna...love it. (But I confess to have Googled it just to double check what it is.) Does that keep your hair out the way, keep your head warm or is it a style choice? I may have to investigate this option.

Thanks, Irish-John.

Irish-John profile image
Irish-JohnGraduate in reply to Nilsam

Keeps hair out of the way, can be an emergency bandage in case of a fall, and when really hot stops the sweat from stinging eyes :)

Brilliant...multi functioning. 👍

Irish-John profile image
Irish-JohnGraduate in reply to Nilsam

Yep. One thing I have definitely strived for over the years is that everything I carry be as adaptable to different purposes as possible :) I goy it down to where I could go overseas for three or four weeks with just carry on bags and felt quite proud of myself, until I met someone who did the same thing with just two shopping bags :)

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Irish-John

You are right, John. When you strip back what you have it is certainly simplifies life a bit. 👍But there will always be those that take it further.

Well done for doing W5 R3. I’m with Enid - lots of bright colours.

Thanks, Dexy5. If we had a vote it looks like bright colours would win.

Colours for me too! Usually plain top but bright leggings.

I think we all could benefit from being a little bit Enid, what clothes is concerned.

When starting running, I only had long leggings that were were black. Two years on, I have very colourful leggings, shorts and capris and love them all!

So nice to see Enid explore something different, although I have to admit, I’ve become attached to her yellow, orange, red look.

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to CBDB

Thank you, CBDB. It's great to read that so many of the community did the journey from black to bright and maybe I ought to release the reigns on Enid a bit. Also if don't change up her outfit I am going to have to buy more red and yellow paint for my paintings. 😘👍🏻

Jojoarnie profile image

Neon and bright colours all the way!!! Sturdy by Design's shorts, capris and leggings are fantastic - people are so busy admiring the leggings that they don't really look at how you're running... Just sayin'...

Oh love it, Jojoarnie. A secret revealed.😁 Thank you. 👏🤸🏻‍♀️👍🏻

Someone on here recommended Rainbows and Sprinkles and I got bright coloured cats, Highland Cattle and wooly sheep leggings. I should have only got one pair, but I couldn't choose 🤣🐃🐑🐈They make me and others smile and they have stretch and pockets etc, but also give a message that this is for fun!

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Kirst13

Oh I am definitely going to have a look at those. They sound wonderfully mad even if I only wore them around the house. 👍😜

Kirst13 profile image
Kirst13Graduate in reply to Nilsam

It's amazing how couch to 5k changes you. I started out in walking boots, casual trousers and a fleece and under cover of darkness. This morning I ran in swim shorts and a purple top through the town. Not quite brave enough to go down to the watersports bratop that I had on underneath for the swim at the end, but I think that time may come, flab and all 🤣

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Kirst13

That's brilliant to read. Very inspirational. Well done, Kirst13. Go you!

Started off as the Grey Snail, evolved into a multicoloured mollusc!

There is a good reason though, were one needed, certainly for part of the year... as I am very susceptible to insect bites, especially the peevish horsefly;

healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

Following that post, we had lots of chatter on here and our awesome Irishprincess discovered how much they disliked bright colours!

She also, is tasty to horseflies!

Hence..me in the brightest colours I am able to find, ( in the sales of course)!

From my bright pink Runderwear , to the brightest socks... I am a riot of colour!

I love it..

We are amazing and all of us should be out there strutting our stuff and flaunting it :)

My leggings I wear, mostly at the Coast... these are fairly tame!
Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

They are fabulous...my inner Enid is jumping up and down. 😎👏👍🏻That is also a really interesting trick to reduce the bitey whatsits. Thank you, Oldfloss. It's one to add to the running manual. What a brilliant community.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Nilsam

Well, I figure it is all about enjoyment.. and I just love making folk smile... my Little Princess leggings and my winter owls...and I am a bargain queen....often bright colours and funky patterns get reduced...hence my Orange trail shoes and my Oldfloss road runners... which Mr OF bought me... they have Old Floss on them!!!All good fun and , I do recycle too....

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

As Mouse says later in this post, it is all very inspiring to read what people are wearing. Maybe the colour confidence just grows. 😉👍🏻

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

Oh I remember this Floss! Thank goodness, no bites this year so far 🤞What about you?

Nilsam , colours all the way for me! I run on quiet country roads and so bright colours keep me safer I think. And I like them 😍

Also, a friend who runs and once went to a Running Retreat told me that we shouldn’t wear black when running because dogs react badly to black and are more aggressive.

I love your drawings!

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Irishprincess

Thank you, Irishprincess. I appreciate the support.

This is so interesting...I didn't know about the dog element. I definitely can see bright colour benefits running in the country side and towns.

But now confined to the treadmill...I think adding a bit of colour may just lift my soul a little...and keep Enid happy.

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessGraduate in reply to Nilsam

Absolutely! I did most of C25K on the treadmill and loved it. And even then it was colours all the way. They usually clash with my scarlet coloured face but who cares? 🥵🤗

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Irishprincess

Ha ha...love it. That was me this morning 😳🤸🏻‍♀️Funny that they don't have any happy red faced emojis.🤣👍🏻

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate

... and I have purple and navy and yellow and red.. ( I have been running a long time though...)

Socks!
Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

Aren't they brilliant...very clever. Running socks are soo expensive too. 🤔 Another post maybe.

I love the photo...great colours.

Liono profile image
LionoGraduate in reply to Nilsam

Aren't they just?! I only have 2 pairs, one summer and one winter, so I'm forever having to wait for the wash to finish or running in slightly damp ones 😂

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Liono

Ooh running in damp socks...yuck.

Liono profile image
LionoGraduate in reply to Nilsam

Damp from the wash that is, not sweaty ones 😂 But yeah, must buy more pairs!

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Liono

🤣🤣🤣👏👍🏻🤸🏻‍♀️

Jackapoodle profile image
JackapoodleGraduate

I like the brightest colours I can find for my tops (and I have a couple of perky pink bobble hats for running in colder weather too 😁). Leggings however - black all the way. Well nearly.... the OH once told me to buy some snazzier leggings, apparently navy wasn't what he had in mind 😳 and I still only wear the navy ones when the black ones are all in the wash 🤣🤣🤣

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Jackapoodle

That made me laugh 😘.Yes, maybe navy...

🤔

Leotigris profile image
LeotigrisGraduate

for leggings, colour isn't really important so long as they have pockets!

MissUnderstanding profile image
MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate in reply to Leotigris

Yes!!!! Pockets are everything. Minimum one big for phone, one zipped for keys.

nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate in reply to Leotigris

Absolutely. I have trail shorts and trail leggings that have waist pockets.

I can't tolerate anything in a pocket further down the leg. It completely throws off my balance.

Liono profile image
LionoGraduate in reply to nowster

Totally agree, still trying to find leggings with a big enough waist pocket for my phone - why are they all on one leg?! Makes me feel like my leggings are falling down even when they're not (I hope!)

nowster profile image

Look at Decathlon's trail running leggings.

Thank you Nowster, that's EXACTLY the sort of pocket I'm after! 🤗

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to Leotigris

Oh yes, I love a pocket and couldn't believe it when some shorter leggings didn't have any. Even on the treadmill I still need somewhere for the phone due to the app.

M0use profile image
M0useGraduate

I love bright colours in my non running life but for some reason it's always black leggings (or at best very dark blue). I still go for the colourful tops but always baggy ones. I think I'm kidding myself that no-one will notice all my overweight jiggly bits but who am I fooling when it's topped off with a bright red glowing face 🥵😊

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to M0use

Oh Mouse that made me laugh. I almost got a pair simply because the shade was "beetroot" and I thought they would match my face.

M0use profile image
M0useGraduate in reply to Nilsam

Reading your replies has inspired me, why should we hide in dark plain colours just because we're a bit older or a bit wobblier. We should be standing (or running) proud and saying look what we can do. So next time I'm shopping for running gear I'm going to find the brightest most colourful thing I can. 🌈🌞😊(And if the colour matched beetroot so much the better)

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to M0use

M0use, I am feeling the same way. I will have to wait for the next "treat" time but it is rather inspiring, isn't it?Don't forget to post whatever you go for and I might let "Enid" loose after all. 👍🤔😁

As a guy, the boldest thing I have is a fluorescent yellow fleece top, which is my regular wear during the winter months. I have some race tee shirts in bright blue, but I hardly ever wear them.

My shorts are mostly black. My winter leggings are dark with subtle patterns.

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to nowster

Now Nowster do we think this is a gender thing? 🤔 You may be right. It may contribute.😘

MrBassmanjazz profile image

Well done. ( I actually think if you can do W5 R3 - you can do anything).

I think in bright colours, but my gear is all black! If I was starting again I'd probably research and invest a bit more.

Nilsam profile image
NilsamGraduate in reply to MrBassmanjazz

Thank you...as I am now returning to running I think you have a good point. If I am going to carry on...and I am, I may as well have the gear for comfort and style.Happy running.

Depends on the time on year for me.

Spring and summer I'm basically dressed like Mr Blobby and Barney the Dinosaur have taken over my wardrobe.

Autumn and winter I quite like the full black with pops from my refletors and lights, seems to suit the season more in my mind.

I love the image and I guess you are right...we change with the seasons. The reflectors sound a great idea for road running too Happy running.

Hey….. all those wonderful colours……serious black for me and sometimes a white t shirt for a change…..but I love colours. Black and grey bra top sounds perfect, I haven’t got an inner Enid but there’s a rather frivolous Sola lurking who wants all the bright colours one day. Week 5 run 3 is a great milestone so keep on running.

Haha love this. I’m a mixture of both and what I stick on depends on my mood. Sometimes I’m very bright. Sometimes I’m all black. (Don’t mess with me on black days 😂)
