Has anyone recovered from peroneal tendonitis?

Hi all,

Started couch to 5k a few weeks ago and was doing well though I started noticing an occasional popping sensation in the side of one foot, mainly when walking. Chalked it up as being the same as random knee popping and didn't think too much of it.

Did a lot of walking on Sunday and by the next day the popping was a lot worse and the side of my foot right in the middle was really tender when walking.

It's now been 4 days and there's very little improvement despite icing it and taking ibuprofen. I'm booked to see a physio next week but have a wedding before then and am slightly freaking out as I'd only just returned to exercising after a long term inner ankle issue that's taken years to recover from (nothing near this area!).

I've obviously stopped the running for now (though I'm missing it already). Has anyone got any positive stories of recovery from this kind of thing? I'm a massive stressed so already finding the worst on Google...

TIA!

Hello ,good to see you.

Well, although there may be folk who have had similar issues, and they can share their experiences, we are of course , wonderfully, different, so the outcomes and treatment will be different too.

You are doing the right thing by seeing an expert.. it is what we would have advised:) Once you have done that you will have a starting point, ( By the way, how did you find out that it was this condition)?

Your physio' will know what is what and I am sure will be able to give you a number of specific exercises to get you back on track...there does seem to be a good successful recovery possible although again, your physio will advise you.

Many of us have been out of running for quite long stretches, mine was over 10 weeks... and there is plenty of other exercises to keep your body fit and healthy... although the waiting can be hard...

The good news is, of course, that the runs wait! Keep us posted please:)

I'm afraid I can't help you out as I've never heard of that condition. But like OF says, Its great that you are seeking advice from a healthcare professional!

Do keep us posted...

Hi - I think I had that a couple of years back. Not 100% as was a self-diagnosis with the help of google. No popping with me but I can't say I have ever had that sensation in my knee. Mine was getting sore on the side of the foot in one of the tendons near the ankle during runs. I kind of recognised it as some kind of tendonitis but it was not the Achilles one but one down the side. Walking didn't really trigger the soreness just running. A couple of weeks rest didn't really help as it came back. However I took two or three months off running before starting again slowly and it has been fine since. Anyway hope that helps to set your mind at rest and as you are being sensible unlike me in getting professional help, hopefully they will have some tricks on getting it cured quicker than my ankle did.

Thank you! Mine is so far only diagnosed by a physio over the phone but I'm really just looking for any reassurance as I've had a lot of anxiety induced pain previously and am trying not to let my anxiety run wild! That's great to hear yours did recover in the end x

๐Ÿ ๐Ÿค—First of all a hug as anxiety is often harder to overcome than any injury. You have been given excellent advice above & the physio will do their very best for you. You have done wisest thing & most injuries treated professionally and early have excellent outcomes if we adhere to the advice & have patience. We look forward to hearing from you in due course & wish you all the best! Xx

I had peroneal tendonitis just after I graduated C25K. It was brought on by running way too fast in the heat of the moment and wearing old shoes that no longer provided support.

The physio gave me ankle exercises which I did religiously, and after 4-6 weeks of no running, a gait analysis and new trainers I was as good as new.

I was told that tendon injuries take a long time to heal, longer than broken bones, and you absolutely can't speed it up. Rest, ice, compression, elevation and painkillers are your friends until you see the physio. After that, take their advice and you should be OK.

As for the wedding, I suggest you stay clear of six inch killer heels :) Maybe ask the physio what style would be most likely to support you comfortably as you'll probably need to stand around a lot. I broke my little toe as I was leaving to go to a family wedding and wore my high heeled court shoes all day, nearly killed me but I was in my 20s and vain as anything. Not worth it ๐Ÿ˜‚

Good luck and here's to a full recovery :)

Thank you, that's such a positive story to hear! I'm planning on low block heels for the wedding itself then my comfiest trainers with an ankle brace after the reception, plus careful minimal dancing so fingers crossed will be ok! Did you have to rest strictly while it was still twinging a bit walking or was it relative rest (i.e. no running/exercising or going on mega walks but still ok to use it a bit)? I know it's not the same situation but would be good to hear if you managed to get better while still living ๐Ÿ˜…

I'm pretty sure I kept walking but only if it wasn't painful. Definitely didn't run or overdo it. I think the rule is that if it hurts, stop.

It was very frustrating as I was so pleased with myself for finally getting off my backside and learning to run and then suddenly I couldn't.

I think I had an ankle brace too which helped. I'll see if I can dig out my diary for that period and see how much pain and how much exercise was involved ๐Ÿ˜‚

Rest assured, a full recovery is eminently possible. Running is a great way to learn the anatomy of the legs though - I've pulled tendons that I never knew existed.

By the way, if you need a laugh, here's a nurse explaining about the peroneal nerve tiktok.com/@_jen_hamilton_/...

Thank you so much, you've definitely helped to calm down my over anxious brain ๐Ÿ˜… I'm trying my hardest not to do any more Dr googling, going to distract myself with painting my nails and distracting myself with wedding prep!
